Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The majority of students lives off campus after their first year and with good reason. There are a lot of off-campus options, from houses split by the bedroom to single-bedroom apartments.

While housing in Ann Arbor is far from cheap, most off-campus housing is less expensive than the residence halls. Some areas, like streets that shoot off from South University Avenue, are predominantly student-occupied. This makes for a great social atmosphere. However, varied doesn't mean unlimited. Start recruiting friends to live with and get looking for somewhere close to campus by winter of your freshman year, or you may be stuck in the dorms for another year.

Not Enough to Spare

The quality of off-campus housing is three out of four stars- very clean, convenient locations, etc. However, U of M is rapidly expanding every year, which means there's a tighter and tighter squeeze on available places to live. For instance, as of Fall 2012 two whole blocks of apartments totaling more than three hundred are going to be reassigned to freshmen instead of graduate students. That means that the independently-owned apartment complexes nearby the school have risen their rates, knowing that students are desperate enough for housing to snatch up any place they can find. U of M needs to step up and either buy up more of the housing units near its campus or to negotiate deals on our behalf, because one thing a student shouldn't have to worry about is where they'll be living.

Can You Say, Options??

The University makes housing a priority for their students. There are plenty of affordable apartments available on North and Central campuses, and if you start the process decently ahead of time, you have a good chance of finding an apartment cheaper than living in the dorms. If apartments aren't your thing, there are houses all over campus that students often live in with a couple friends. This splitting of the rent can also end up being cheaper than University housing if you plan well. The majority of apartments and houses are right on campus and close to classes.
