Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It's a good thing the University of Michigan campus is contained to a small area because parking is scarce. There are a lot of places to park, but spots are rarely free and almost always taken.

Luckily, students agree that you don't really need a car on campus. If you do need to go somewhere that isn't within walking distance, the University provides ample bus service. The main reason for using the bus system is to get to North Campus, but the ride isn't very long, and the buses come around frequently.

Parking? Thats a Joke

Parking is terrible. Do not bring a car unless you have a house with a driveway that you can park your car in. Classes are all walking distance, so its really not a big deal to not have a car. Also, the busses are always running. Sure, waiting for a bus isn't the best thing in the world, but it sure beats having to walk 10 minutes to the parking space you had to circle around for 15 minutes for. Plus, if you don't have a car you can just take advantage of the suckers who brought one

You Will Get Tickets

If you don't pay the meter or it runs out, they will find you. You get half off if you pay by the next business day though. Parking is often hard to find on central campus, and most freshman can't get parking if they live in the dorms, though most apartments and houses have it available and there are spots for rent. Don't park in a no-parking area or in private lots, or you will likely be towed, especially on football Saturdays.

Could Be Better but You Don't Really Need to Drive

north campus has plenty of parking. but you really don't need a car at all. the only thing you might need a car for is doing some serious grocery shopping or something like that. other than that town has enough stores to cover all your needs.

Getting a Parking Permit

Parking permits are few and far between. Since there is no specific student parking lot, one must be crafty (and rich) to get a permit. Most parking facilities are monitored and available only to employees of the University.
