College Prowler Take

To put it simple, the University of Michigan is a sports fan’s paradise. From football to broomball, Michigan’s teams are stellar. It’s worth going to school here just to experience the Big House packed with over 100,000 maniacal Wolverine fans when the team is in town—especially when we play Michigan State or Ohio State.

At Michigan, the sports teams aren’t simply teams, they are a way of life. How could sports not be huge when 110,000 fans fill the biggest stadium in the country on six Saturdays each fall? Although Michigan has two main rivals, Michigan State University and Ohio State, it seems like Michigan is everyone’s rival. It’s fun to be the school everyone loves to hate, and if you arrive in Ann Arbor having never cheered for the Wolverines, you’ll find yourself chanting “Go Blue!” and wearing your maize and blue in no time. In addition to big sports like football and hockey, Michigan’s swimming, field hockey, and gymnastics teams, among others, are always among the best in the nation. Intramurals are big, too, and members of winning teams wear their “IM Champion” T-shirts with pride. If you crave both big-time sports and big-time academics, don’t even hesitate, come to Michigan.

Club sports are great. At a school this big, it’s hard to be on the varsity team unless you’re a high school All-American, so club sports are often played at high levels of competition, and you get to travel around the country to compete against other college’s club teams.

I think the biggest IM sports are broomball and inner tube water polo, both of which are so fun, and both of which I had never heard of before coming here.

Sports on campus are huge, especially football, basketball, and hockey. The games are great, so get season tickets to football if you have a chance. Even if you don’t use the tickets, it’s easy to sell them, usually for a profit. IM sports are also popular.

If you do anything before you graduate, go see a hockey game at Yost. It’s insane. Michigan hockey fans are often compared to Duke basketball fans. They’re crazy!

Varsity sports at Michigan are huge! There’s nothing in the world like watching a football game in the Big House with 110,000 of your closest friends. Ice hockey at Yost is probably even more fun than the Big House, although it only seats 6,000 people. Other sports aren’t nearly as popular, but each has its loyal following. IM sports are popular and competitive, so much so that people are willing to sign up for broomball at 2 a.m. during the week.
