College Prowler Take

Surprisingly, the majority of student comments about the campus food at UM aren’t entirely pessimistic. Everyone admits it’s not the best food, but it seems to get fewer complaints than some schools. The student body overwhelmingly picks North Campus’s Bursley Hall as the dorm with the best food service, and East Quad gets the lowest marks, so bear that in mind if you choose Michigan.

The dorms offer several dining choices and generally seem to do the most they can with what they have, which would explain the funny-looking meatloaf at the end of the week. As compared to other schools with improved dining options, Michigan offers the typical: hot and cold entrees, a salad bar, and desserts. Weekend brunches are known by many students as the best cooked meals of the week, and don’t be surprised to see tired and hungover classmates wearing pajamas and slippers. For what it’s worth, you can get by just fine, but don’t expect to write home about how great the grub is.

The dorm food is okay. Stockwell, Barbour, and Bursley Halls have the better cafeterias. If you are going to live in the dorms, you will get to eat at any of them, regardless of where you stay.

There are plenty of good places to eat on campus; it’s just that most of them are not in the dorms. Mr. Spots is a very good spot for hoagies and Philly cheesesteaks, and Pizza House is a good all-around food joint. China Chef probably has the best Chinese food on campus, and Jimmy John’s is great for a late-night sandwich.

The food at the dining halls might not be the best around, but they offer much more than food. They are a place to meet people, take a break from the studying, and just hang out with friends. And what the dining halls lack in quality and variety, the city of Ann Arbor more than makes up for. There are so many fantastic restaurants that living there for four years is not even close to enough time to try them all. There are also so many places and traditions that are unique to Ann Arbor. Frozen yogurt colliders at Rod’s, pizza sticks at Charley’s, and chipatis at Pizza House are only familiar to Michigan students and alumni.

The campus food is okay. Dorm food is pretty consistent across campus, but people say that Bursley Hall has the best food. I stayed there freshman year, and I think that the only reason Bursley is the ‘best’ is because it has the most options at all times.

Dorm food isn’t too bad at UM. The food at Bursley is the best if you ask me. Also, if you get a meal plan, then you can eat at Wendy’s, Tim Horton’s, McDonald’s and other places—just like eating a meal in the dorm!

Did You Know?

Your M-Card (student ID card) has a feature called “Entrée Plus” which can store money for use in many restaurants within campus buildings, including those listed on the previous pages.

If you miss the normal meal hours, grab a bite in East Quad’s “Halfway Inn.” Your meal plan works there just as it does in the cafeterias.
