At Michigan, you have to deal with two authorities: the Ann Arbor police, and Michigan’s DPS (Department of Public Safety) who patrol the dorms and campus facilities. If you’re smart, you can get away with anything short of murder in the dorms, but be careful. For the most part, the Ann Arbor Police are pretty easy-going, so unless you’re out of control, they’ll usually leave you alone. They generally seem more concerned with student safety than they are with getting students into trouble.

Campus strictness is not too big an issue at UM. Dorms say they’re strict, but you can get away with quite a lot if you’re careful. Crafty freshmen can throw some good parties in the dorms, and if they get written up, it’s not the end of the world. Frats are pretty conscious about adhering to rules, thus their policies have tightened as of late. Concerning the AAPD, their policies are so lax, it’s almost a joke. Any city police force that openly socializes with drunken college kids and imposes an incredibly marginal fine for marijuana use is pretty darn lax. To put this into perspective, students from other colleges would kill to feel as free as students at UM.

Well, it’s easy to get away with a lot, I think, but the University and the city of Ann Arbor have different laws and penalties. The University has to follow state laws since it’s a public university. If you’re caught on campus, chances are you will be treated differently than if you were off campus.

You can definitely get away with drinking in the dorms if you’re careful. I’ve smuggled many a keg up the Markley stairwells.

Ann Arbor has the most lax marijuana laws I know of. I’ve heard that possession is just a small fine. But if you’re an athlete, it depends on your coach and if you’re in season. Drugs are definitely out, but some coaches make you have a dry season.

Drinking is not hard to do, but I’ve had friends get in serious trouble. Drugs are the same way. It’s a college campus, what do you expect?

Police and school administration have really cracked down on the Naked Mile lately, which I think sucks. It was such a fun tradition, and now it’s pretty much over.

What Are You Most Likely to Get Caught Doing on Campus?

  • Trying to get into a bar using a fake ID
  • Having liquor in your dorm room

Did You Know?

Now a quickly-fleeting Michigan tradition, the “Naked Mile” happens on the night of the last day of classes each winter semester (in April). What used to amount to hundreds of naked runners and thousands of peeping spectators, has now been quelled to a few courageous, and often jail-bound, daredevils. Either way, it used to be tolerated by the cops until the University administration cracked down (no pun intended) on it in the past few years.
