College Prowler Take

Public universities may have their problems, but they also have huge upsides. One of those perks is the massive budget they usually command. This is why Michigan has plenty of computer facilities for the students to use, and most people agree that the computers and labs here are easily accessible, except during finals. Also, with technology this great, who would ever want to leave? Some people gripe about the wait during midterms and finals, but it’s usually not that bad. But don’t worry; if you get your work done ahead of time, then you won’t be caught up in the finals rush anyway. The computer facilities are great, but most students still recommend bringing your own computer. But with so many labs, including labs in each residence hall, one can easily get by without a computer. During peak periods, you may have to wait a few minutes for a computer, but in labs as large as the Fishbowl, you’ll usually be hard at work (or playing solitaire) in no time. Also, in addition to Ethernet hookups in all dorms and many classrooms, more and more of the campus is connected to the wireless Web, which can be great for those long nights of studying in the library.

Bring your own computer. Almost everyone does, and it is so much easier than using the computer labs. But there are always a few computers open. The Internet is T3, which is nice, and you have plenty of storage space and paper to use.

I brought my own, but every dorm has a computer lab that’s open 24 hours. It really is not a necessity, most of my friends do not have a computer, and they do just fine. I mean, there are so many labs, and most are either open 24 hours or stay open pretty late.

If you can afford it, bring your own computer. The labs get crowded during finals, but you can usually find one. The network is good and has just been upgraded to one of the best in the country.

I wouldn’t have survived college at UM without a computer. There are computer labs everywhere, but the most convenient ones seem to be full, and who wants to wait around? The network seems to work fine, although, ironically, the engineering network seems to break down far more often than it should.

Ethernet rocks! There are lots of computer labs, one in each dorm. Definitely bring your own computer if possible, though.
