College Prowler Take
The nightlife in Ann Arbor is fantastic, that is, if you’re 21 or older. There are reportedly not a whole lot of bars that will accept that fake ID your friend’s older brother got for you, so you’re best bet is to find a frat party or house party to drink at. Once you do turn 21 though, the nightlife is pretty active so, until then, start training to go out four nights a week. There are basically three parts to the social life at Michigan. 1) frats; 2) house parties; and 3) bars and clubs. The bars get good reviews, and they provide a nice escape from the frat scene. If you choose to go Greek, your social life will be dominated by the frat/sorority scene for the first two years. House parties are another viable option, and usually very fun. At Michigan, as opposed to some other schools, you rarely pay for a cup at house parties. Expect to drink for free if there’s a keg. Just make sure you return the favor when you throw a party. The bars become a desired option once you’re legal. If you’re not 21, beware, fake IDs will most likely get taken. Don’t worry, your time to “drink like a responsible adult” will eventually come—followed shortly by asprin and other hangover remedies.

There are a few really good bars right on campus such as Rick’s, Good Time Charley’s, and Scorekeepers, but be prepared to need an ID. |

Unless you have a flawless fake ID, bars will pretty much be off limits. My favorite spot, once I became of age, was Rick’s on Wednesday nights. There are not too many clubs in Ann Arbor; there is the Nectarine, the Heidelberg, and the Blind Pig. Your best bet is the frat parties, though. |

Conor O’Neill’s is a great Irish bar, and it’s a good break from the scene at the campus bars. The crowd is a bit more mellow, and there is a greater mix of non-students and locals. |

I personally don’t drink, so I couldn’t tell you about the bars, but my friends said they were pretty standard. |

I’m not 21, so I don’t really know...
I’m not 21, so I don’t really know about the bars. In terms of clubs, Ann Arbor isn’t really a clubbing town. Most kids party at the frat houses or at private parties. There are some clubs in the city, but I haven’t really gone to them. I have heard mixed reviews. Ann Arbor is close to other cities that have clubs—if you have friends with cars, it’s only about a 45-minute drive to the bars in Canada. |
Facts
Bar Prowler
The bar scene is very active on Michigan’s campus. If you’re a true bar rat, here’s the schedule down to a science. Rest on Monday. On Tuesday, go to Mitch’s. On Wednesday, go to Rick’s. On Thursday, go to Scorekeepers. On Friday, go to Touchdown’s, and on Saturday most likely back to Rick’s. Of course, there are plenty of other bars, but if you want the best drink specials, stick to these spots. Grad students prefer Ashley’s and Conor O’Neill’s on Main Street, which are Irish pubs.
Bar Listings
Across the street from the Law Quad sits Dominick’s, lauded as one of the favorite bars in town. Only open from March until October, the outdoor patio/garden in the back, and the large outdoor porch in front are packed when the weather is nice. Known for its sangria, great micro brews, and good food, Dominick’s is a hit. On a beautiful spring day, expect the place to be packed with students enjoying every second of sunshine they can. It’s truly a unique place that is always a great time. Go early, because it closes at 10 p.m. Dominick’s 812 Monroe St. (734)662-5414
Close to Michigan Theatre, Scorekeepers is hopping on Thursdays, but the best drink specials are on the weekend, when you can get either $2 well drinks or $2 bottles of beer. Good dancing and a good time. Scorekeepers 310 Maynard St. (734) 995-0581
Close to Mitch’s, this bar now hosts some of the best booty-shakin’ in town, and it has drink specials to match. Although, on a one-night occurrence, Eminem made a surprise guest appearance, and gave a performance that kept the bar open until 4 a.m. Touchdown Café 1220 S. University Ave. (734) 665-7777
Just off S. University, across the street from Pizza House sits your typical college basement bar. No one knows why people stand in line just to go to a crowded, dark basement, but it’s always a good time. On Wednesdays, drink your fill of $2 pitchers while dancing to the most popular pop/dance songs of the moment. Rick’s 611 Church St. (734) 996-2747
Mitch’s is a relaxing bar with live music and cheap Coronas on Tuesday nights. Mitch’s 1301 S. University Ave. (734) 665-2650
On Main Street, four blocks from campus, is a great Irish pub. Go there for great beer from around the world, but don’t expect it to be cheap. Conor O’Neill’s 318 S. Main St. (734) 665-2968
Steps from the Diag, Ashley’s is a great spot to grab a beer and some great bar food. It’s very chill, and usually full of grad students. Ashley’s 338 S. State St. (734) 996-0439
What to Do if You're Not 21
Go to house parties, drive to Windsor, Ontario, or you can usually get into the Necto; just be prepared to have a big stamp put on your hand by an even bigger bouncer.
