College Prowler Take

Five little letters can accurately summarize the parking situation at UM: S-U-C-K-S. It’s expensive, hard to find, and you can’t park with a University permit as a freshman. The University permits are not cheap either. On the bright side, if you move into off-campus housing, you’ll most likely have a spot to park your car. Otherwise, you’re left to fend for yourself finding a spot on the street, which can take hours upon hours. Good luck. Parking is a huge problem at UM, it’s just that simple. Since everyone lives within walking distance, everyone walks to class, but if you must drive, be prepared to hunt for an open meter for quite a while. There are certain lots, but they require a pass to enter, so it’s not worth it, and the streets are usually packed bumper to bumper with cars. But not to worry too much, if you get a ticket, you can pay it at the drive-thru window at the police station for $5. And girls, if you catch an officer ticketing your car, be extra charming; you might just get out it.

There is nothing to comment on about parking because it doesn't really exist. You don't need a car anyway.

Parking is horrible on campus. That is one downside to Ann Arbor. If you plan on bringing a car, you can buy a student pass and park in a lot that’s probably miles from where you’re staying. If you have a house or apartment, they usually provide a few parking spots.

If you drive to class, you’re an idiot. You’ll spend more time looking for a parking spot than you would walking to class.

Parking is easy if you have a parking pass. It’s brutal if you don’t. I’m not sure how much one costs, but if you’re in the dorm, it’s a good thing to invest in. It is certainly possible to find parking on the streets. I have friends who have done it.

Parking in Ann Arbor is about knowing the tricks of the trade. If you park in a faculty permit lot or on the street, you’re likely to get a lot of tickets. But there are some visitor lots where you have to pay a central machine. They rarely patrol those lots, and tickets are cheap.
