College Prowler Take

Since Ann Arbor is a relatively small city, most Michigan students feel relatively safe. There are few worries of major crime, and despite a few robberies and peeping Toms, students feel pretty secure in their college town. As of late, security has been beefed up, so most worries have subsided. If you want riots, tear gas, and burning couches, then feel free to head to Michigan State.

The University has its own police force, and when teamed with the AAPD, one needs to look no further for assistance. Sure, there are cases of petty theft, but Ann Arbor is a safe city with a highly-visible police force. Reviews of UHS (University Health Service) aren’t so hot, although it’s a free, comprehensive health service available to all University of Michigan students. Upon entry of the health center though, just be prepared to hear, “It’s a virus.” If you are seeking their advice, do yourself a favor and go someplace else! If you have a problem more serious than a cold or the flu, don’t hesitate to venture to the University of Michigan Medical Center, which is among the top 10 hospitals in the nation. Overall, safety on campus isn’t much of a worry to Michigan students, although someone may be watching you . . .
just kidding.

This year, there were some issues regarding security and safety here. I’ve been here for four years, and in the first three, there were no problems. But because of a few peeping Toms and some robberies, (which could have been avoided if people would lock their doors), security on campus has been beefed up, so it’s pretty good now.

Security is good here, I suppose. There are lots of programs set up by the University to keep students safe. For example, the dorms can only be accessed with a student ID after 8 p.m. There is also S.A.F.E.WALK, which is a program set up for students who need someone to walk them home from the library after pulling a near all-nighter. I’ve personally never used it, but some of my female friends think it’s great. Campus is also very well lit at night!

There are blue phones all around campus that signal the police and flash a blue light if picked up.

Security on campus is good. There are security cars on campus, and there are such services as S.A.F.E.WALK, where students (usually one guy and one girl each trip) will walk with you if you want to be accompanied home when it’s late and you’re at the library or something.

The UM campus always felt pretty secure to me. It is well lit and everything. There are services such as the Night Owl bus service and Nite Ride that provide transportation from the library when it’s late. On any University campus, you’ve got to be a little careful.
