College Prowler Take

What did you expect—70s and sunny year round? It’s Michigan, for crying out loud! And bad winters are a fact of life here. The weather sucks, but that’s no secret. If you’re not from Michigan, or even the midwest, you’ve better be prepared for a winter like you have never dreamed of. If weather matters that much to you, then you may not be happy at Michigan—at least in the winter. But few places are more pleasant in the fall or spring, when thousands of students crowd the Diag (center of campus) to lay out, toss the Frisbee, or study. Often, however, that awful winter is right around the corner. From about mid-November until late March, don’t expect to see the sun much. And it can get downright awful trudging in snow in the bitter cold and freezing rain that is all too common here. Bring a hat, gloves, and a scarf—and don’t be embarrassed to wear them. But, if 24,000 students can handle it year after year, so can you. It’s really not all that bad. Just let the alcohol warm you up!

The weather around here generally sucks. The winters are fraught with a lot of snow, whereas the summer sun can sometimes be unbearable. The spring and the fall can be really beautiful, but weather during those months fluctuates too much for you to actually settle on one particular weather pattern. Winter can be horrible because it makes you not want to leave your room. Sitting cooped up in a room for many months during the harsh winter is not my idea of fun.

This year, we had a really mild winter. Overall, it wasn’t bad. This is the first time I have lived in seasons. Fall is really pretty. And I think winter is fun because I have never lived in snow. It takes a little time and some warm clothes before you get used to the weather in Michigan, but we’re young, so we can handle it.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Although UofM does not give out lemons, it does supply an abundance of cold weather and snow. My suggestion? Instead of being a party pooper who is too afraid to venture out into the cold, figure out a way to make it a positive experience. Sledding on the arb, having snowball fights, making snowmen and playing hockey at the Music School pond are great ways to pass the winter.
