Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Golden Gopher sports have a huge following of not only current students and alumni, but also those who have never attended a single class at the University of Minnesota. As a Big 10 school, there is a lot of media coverage of U of M teams. Being a D-I rival really adds to the competitiveness of the players, too. Even the non-rated teams and intramural sports are very popular, and students are mostly supportive of the sports programs. Sporting events provide students with an opportunity to rally behind a cause and show their school spirit.

As a “winter” state, Minnesotans love hockey. Having the Gopher men's hockey team go to the NCAA national finals in recent years has certainly increased student enthusiasm. Despite the decline in the performance of many popular sports like football, students still attend the games because they want to support their team; plus, they enjoy tailgating and being a part of the student body. Intramural and club sports also have the support of the students. There are many people who take advantage of these recreational teams and play a sport for the love of it instead of in the competitive spirit. The sporting facilities are great. The U of M has various athletic fields for many sports. Students support the Gophers and enjoy being part of the team—because fans are as important as the players.

Gopher Sports

Athletics play a large role in student activity at the University of Minnesota. Students have a tremendous amount of pride for varsity athletics whether we win or loose. Student tickets go very quickly as there are purchased the first moment they become available. At different sporting events, there are multiple chants and songs that help to cheer on the gophers. Goldy (the school mascot) always attends each sporting event to get the crowd involved in cheering for support. Every student, parent, and grandparent is always wearing maroon and gold along with face paint to get into the spirit. There is always an athletic event being held during the week and weekend that is packed with proud gopher fans.

Good Sports, Not the Best

There are a lot of options are the University of Minnesota, but (as a non-athlete) it seems some sports and their athletes get all the love. The really good athetes get the good dorm, with the good dining hall. Maybe should play favorites a little less because we are all students anyway.

Most Popular Sports

At the University of Minnesota, you can bet there is a lot of pride for the ice striders, especially the men's ice hockey team. The women’s hockey team is also starting to capture the spirit of this ice-loving state. Despite the shortcomings in performance, as a Big 10 school, football is very popular and so is basketball. These sports give students a chance to unite and stand for one team.

Most Overlooked Teams

Track, baseball, women's soccer, wrestling

School Spirit

School spirit is a big part of the U of M campus. It is most widely supported by wearing U of M apparel and the wide attendance at sporting events. The "Better dead than red," "Buck the Fadgers," and "Who hates Iowa?" shirts put the most popular rivalries on display. While not everyone rallies behind the Gopher sports, they are always proud to show their spirit.

Getting Tickets

Most tickets are easily accessible through the Gopher Sports website. Students can purchase tickets and find out where their seats are, too.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Stone Arch Bridge, East River Walkway, and the Northrop area are good places to take a walk. Also, the streets of Downtown, Dinkytown, and Uptown around the lake are good spots.
