Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With the size of U of M's student body, it is easy to get lost in a sea of swimming bodies. One can be unique, and yet fit in with the crowd. The U of M houses the whole spectrum of stereotypical jocks, nerds, geeks, goths, emos, and those who either fit in more than one category and those who make their own trends. You can wear Lady Gaga outfits and still feel welcomed by the students. An average student walks around with backpacks, headphones in their ears, hurrying to class. Although students are all different from one another because of their experiences, beliefs, and backgrounds, there is something about standing outside in the minus 20 F weather, waiting for the bus together, that builds relationships. Or soaking up the sun in the mall area. All in all, it is fairly common for a student to ask to join an intramural sports team or a game of Frisbee with total strangers. Everyone is genuinely helpful ("Minnesota nice" at its finest) and willing to meet new people.

The guy-to-girl ratio is pretty balanced, as well. Guys make up a little less than 50 percent of the population, but it doesn't necessarily tip the scale too much. There are neighboring schools to even it out, too. U of M offers anything from casual hookups to dating to serious relationships to soul mates. Want a sloppy girl to hook up with? No problem. A gentleman who will gently kiss you goodnight on the doorstep after a great date? Sure thing. Looking for someone to do yoga with? Watch movies? Discuss the Bible? Absolutely! And, of course, everyone likes "cuddle buddies." A student is bound to make connections with people—good or bad. There will be people who enjoy the same things and have a similar outlook on life, and then there will be the opposites, defying every belief one might have. But these interactions are what build one's character. There is so much to be learned from others, and U of M offers the perfect environment to develop connections and explore relationships.

Immature

Most of the guys I've met at school so far are more immature than high school boys. Part of the issue is that as a freshmen, I haven't had a chance to meet a lot of older guys and am therefore judging the boys I see most. However, there is definitely eye candy here and I've certainly met some older guys who have it together.

Facts

Social Scene

Sometimes, it can be difficult to make strong relationships with people, due to the big size of the University. However, if one is willing, which most people are, it is easy to find people of similar interests. All they have to do is be social and try new adventures. For example, go to a Minnesota International Student Association (MISA) event and meet people with different histories. Or get involved in any of the hundreds of campus groups or make a new one. Most freshmen live in dorms, where it is easiest to make friends because everyone is in the same boat and looking to make new friends. And remember, there are many people alike who are still fledgling in finding their niche on campus. Don't be afraid to approach people. Students tend to be helpful and friendly toward one another. If a student does, however, have a beef with someone, it is quite easy to ignore that person in the sea of maroon and gold, and carry on with their exploration.

Hookups or Relationships?

There is a combination of hookups and relationships at the University of Minnesota. While it is a common perception that college kids are into physicality of relations and enjoy hooking up, it is not always the case. Because there is such a wide diversity of student mentalities, many students easily find compatible, long-term partners. On the other hand, if you are in for experiencing the crazy and wild side of the college lifestyle, there are plenty of fish who will take your bait. "Frat row," where most fraternities are located and where most ostentatious parties happen, is an ideal place to meet like-minded liberal people. As long as you are careful and with good company, you can enjoy a hot fling without compromising your security. Whatever one looks for in a partner, it can be found by making connections and being at the right place at the right time.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

It all depends on the situation that you're seeking. A quick hookup can be found in the midst of any drunken dance floor or bar. Otherwise, relationship sparks may ignite with a lab partner during a chemical reaction, the hottie down the hall, or surprisingly, in the laundry room while waiting for a dryer.

Dress Code

There is no "dress code," per se. The University of Minnesota is a liberal college and very tolerable of students expressing themselves in various ways. Most of the dress code is decided by the weather. During fall, shorts, dresses, jeans, and T-shirts are seen during the daytime, and hoodies often take over by nighttime. In winter, boots, Uggs, sweaters, coats in an array of colors, leggings, mittens, gloves, and hats are in fashion. Spring semester is a mix of both. Although it often snows during spring break, by the end of the school year, summer fashion is in full flair with dresses, shirts, skirts, sunglasses, and flip-flops rocked by the students. But no matter what the season may be, representing school spirit in Gopher gear is always in fashion.

Did You Know? Some best "first date" ideas around campus include a concert on First Avenue, miniature golf and food at the Mall of America, Twins/Vikings games, Como Park Zoo, drinks at the Library or Sally's, bowling at Goldy's Gameroom, Gopher football/basketball/hockey games, Water Park of America, a coffee date at the Purple Onion Café in Dinkytown, and salsa dancing and dinner at Loring Pasta Bar.
