Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The security at the University of Minnesota campus is remarkable. The University police are always driving, walking, or biking around campus—monitoring and looking for any suspicious activity or behavior. There are emergency phones located in many places to be used by students if they feel unsafe or are in any need of assistance. Students are highly advised to travel in packs, especially late at night. Otherwise, they should use the (612) 624-WALK to have an escort walk them to their destination.

The U of M takes its students safety very seriously. After some unfortunate incidents of assaults during Greek parties, security has been tightened up and consequences have been taken against those involved. Thus, this is a testimony that student safety comes first at U of M. Besides that, the campus and environment is secure, and the presence of authorities is substantial, but it is integrated in the surroundings. There are cops to do their jobs well to ensure that all the students are safe, but they do not interfere with students' lives. Students feel safe, for the most part. When any thefts or assaults do happen, the police emails all students to warn them of such activities. While the University does its job to provide campus security, students must always be attentive to their surroundings at all times.

So Safe

I've literally left the library before at midnight or 1 am both on school nights and weekends during finals time and walked by myself and never felt threatened.

Not That Safe

The University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus is not that safe, there are a lot of students walking around all the time but still you can't always know everyone, so I have seen people get their wallets stolen and bikes as well. There are not as many police officers as there should be, for the amount of kids that there are.

U of M-Many Ways to Stay Safe!

I feel very safe on campus! Although there has been a few crimes on campus this year, it can be avoided but not walking at night, walking with others, or using the University's escort service which allows students to call for a walking buddy to and from anywhere on campus. Also, I see police officers all around campus. All of the resident halls are locked and only students can get in. they always remind us not to let people in who don't have a University ID. Overall, I feel very safe here!!
