Advice on Finding a Job/Internship
  • By visiting the website www.onestop.umn.edu/onestop, students can find other employment opportunities geared toward their major. Some major departments have a list that sends emails about job or internship opportunities. For example, the English department sends all of the emails regarding jobs or internships focusing on English to all English majors. This idea is wonderful for students who do not have much time to peruse the Internet and other informational resources in order to find internships or jobs. As for majors requiring research, a student can simply email his or her professors to see if any research positions are open or if any other professor is conducting them. This is common for the science majors at the U of M. Another great resource is www.goldpass.umn.edu. It is a website that links students to the community, the state, and often to opportunities far away. Create an account with the U of M email, and a student can search for jobs and internships. Filters can be used based on interests, majors, or pay. It is recommended that people use this resource because it is a great way to take advantage of the close proximity to downtown Minneapolis, where many internships and jobs open up.
  • It is highly encouraged that students get involved in jobs and internships as soon as possible. Sophomore year is an ideal year to start getting some hands-on out-of-class experience. And U of M offers great career services to be utilized by students, so make an effort and reap the benefits!
  • The University of Minnesota offers many jobs and internships. By going to the U of M Human Resources website (www1.umn.edu/ohr/employment), a student can find an on- or off-campus job, part time or full time. If one does not have Internet access, the student can visit the Job Center in 170 Donhowe Building, 319 15th Ave. It is open Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Check the postings there to see what is available. If a student is just looking for a job to earn some extra cash while in college, there will be fliers all over campus. Since East Bank is in the hub, jobs can be found at any store from Jimmy John's, Bruegger's, the bookstore, or at Dining Services. Dinkytown also has openings.
Did You Know? Many colleges have career fairs several times throughout the year for students to meet and apply to jobs and internships in the area.
