Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The University of Minnesota is a city of its own. There are always concerts to attend, parties to go to, coffee shops to try, and much more. The U of M and the Twin Cities are full of opportunities and possibilities for those who look for them. One can go hiking or camping, clubbing downtown, catch up with a friend in one of the many locally-owned coffee shops, attend one of many performances, go to an athletic event, or even just bike around one of the lakes, go on nature walks, and whatever else one's heart desires. Being close to downtown allows for students looking to be in the hub of activities to just hop on a bus and be on their way. Uptown has a little more of a sophisticated take on life. Students can walk around lakes, sip on some coffee or juice, and enjoy being outdoors.

Minnesota is beautiful at every time of the year. Summer brings out farmers' markets, Valleyfair, Minnesota State Fair, and other carnivals. The winter activities range from competitive skiiing to snowball fights. Fall brings about many apple orchards and pumpkin patches. Overall, the Twin Cities is the right blend of the fast urban life, the stable suburban life, and the simplistic rural life. No matter what a student prefers, he or she is guaranteed to find the local atmosphere accommodating to every mood and taste.

the local atmosphere at the U of M is great. dinkytown has great restaurants and late night food (mesa pizza, qdoba), fun bars with good drink specials for the poor college kid, and of course you are right in the middle of the city of minneapolis. saying that, you do have to have a brain and remember to be safe at night, but rarely did i ever feel unsafe. just be smart!

downtown and uptown minneapolis are awesome- a really great night out. however, lets say you wanted to go downtown (ahem, The Shout House dueling pianos bar, 80s night wednesday, just a hint)- you would likely have to get a cab and split fare with friends. not the easiest areas to get to but lots of fun.

minneapolis is a surprisingly expensive city as well- be prepared to do your homework on living situations and costs.

Best of Both Worlds

There are a ton of places to hang out and study, and since it's close to downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, plenty of places to go shopping and explore for different attractions and activities. It's never a dull moment here.

Too Big to Fit in

At first, I believed going to school in Minneapolis would be beneficial for its plethora of opportunities due to its large size, but I soon found out that the size is more of a burden than a benefit. Any activities are too far away to walk to, so it is necessary to attempt to navigate the maze of a bus system, meanwhile paying overly priced tickets and getting lost.
