College Prowler Take
Golden Gopher sports have a huge following, of not only current students and alumni, but also by those who have never attended a single class at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. As a Big 10 university, there is a lot of media coverage of our teams. Being a D-I rival really adds to the competitiveness of our players. Even our non-rated teams and intramural sports are very popular, and students are mostly supportive of the sports programs. As a “winter” state, Minnesotans love hockey. Having the two-peat NCAA national title holders in the Gopher Men’s Hockey team has certainly increased that enthusiasm. So much so, that some students decided to do their best “Chicago Bulls three-peater” fan impression by destroying parts of Dinkytown. Don’t worry, though, at least the rioting was civil, and nobody got hurt. And Gopher Football is as big as, well, Big 10 football. The men’s basketball team saw one of their players turn pro recently. Despite their recent seasons, they have a rather loud fan-base. If only the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities got national champs out of more than just the men’s hockey team. But, if you are so inclined, you can avoid the hubbub by simply staying away from Stadium Village, Dinkytown, and certain bars on game nights.

Varsity sports at the U of M are massive. People get really excited for them, and they unite everyone. Anytime there is a game or event, the students definitely let the rest of the world know whats going on. Intramural sports are a huge thing here also. Volleyball is awesome. You meet a ton of different people.

Varsity sports are fairly big,...
Varsity sports are fairly big, although rarely successful. 2008-2009 has been a year marked by great seasons for the first few games, followed by painful second halves. People still get pretty into the games, and in fall of '09 the new football stadium will open, which will make the experience even better. Fingers crossed for new (or at least improved) players to go with it. Intramurals are a great alternative to the intense varsity teams, too, and a lot of fun. Frolf, anyone?

Varsity sports on campus are treasured at this school, especially being a Big Ten school. Intramural sports are also very competitive, and one must be very good in order to get on either one of the teams

Varsity sports are a huge deal....
Varsity sports are a huge deal. Being that the school is in Minnesota, hockey is major. And with a coach like Tubby Smith, it's hard not to get into basketball. The teams have been decent lately, but the pride has been great as always. There are also a lot of intramural sports that a lot of my friends have gotten into and have really liked.

School Spirit
School spirit doesn't go too far here. The most in-depth spirit you will find is the Minnesota apparel that is part of the daily dress code. The "Better dead than red", "Buck the Fadgers," and "Who hates Iowa?" shirts put our most popular rivalries on display. Administration tried to coin Friday as "Spirit Day," but it hasn't caught on very well. It's never too late to change that, though.
Getting Tickets
Go to Mariucci Arena at 4 Oak St, call (612) 624-8080 or (800) U-GOPHER, or e-mail go4tix@umn.edu. Most tickets are easily accessible, though hockey is on a lottery.
Most Popular Sports
With the repeat national NCAA hockey champs residing at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, you can bet there is a lot of pride for the ice striders. The women’s hockey team is also starting to capture the spirit of this ice-loving state. And, being a Big 10 college means that football is automatically one of the most popular pastimes, with basketball following right behind.
Most Overlooked Teams
Track, baseball, and women's soccer
