Can Always Count on the Fans

Despite a range of season records ranging from Football to Hockey, Gopher fans are proud of their teams and always there to support them at home games. The campus really turns maroon and gold. Facilities are excellent, especially the new stadium.

Big Research University

At such a large school, it is impressive how accessible labs are for biological sciences students! The classes require work, but prepare you for concepts used in labs. Most profs are friendly and welcome students to office hours!

Greeks Are a Close Knit Community

Greeks know each other and make the school much smaller. There are always fun parties and its great to meet other people. Everyone in the greek community is very nice and welcoming. If you aren't in a frat or sorority, you can attend house parties and go to apartments, however, its not guaranteed you will find one every weekend.

The dining in the dinky town area is excellent. There is plenty of variety and the cost is decent. Check out Mesa Pizza and Five Guys, excellent food and gathering place.

I'm a CSE Student, I Don't Pay Attention

Frontier dorm in the living learning community is really helpful. It's nice to be around people that are as dedicated to their school as you are. T-Hall I've heard is the party dorm, but I don't party so I haven't verified that statement. Comstock is for people who want quiet and want to study. The superblock (Frontier, Centenial, Pioneer, and T-Hall). in general is a highly social and fun atmosphere. I don't even know what T-hall's real name is actually... I would stay in the dorms again if I didn't have to buy a meal plan. I can't afford to do both so I live off-campus in a house now and that's really nice. I enjoy having the freedom of making food whenever I want because I have a kitchen, but I miss the social atmosphere.

One of the Best

University of Minnesota is one the best educational institute of higher learning I could have chosen based on it's location, and the academic rating level it put into each one of it's students as individuals and their present and future contribution to the University.

Greek Presence

Being Greek at the U doesn't impact much other than your social scene and even then, Greeks and non Greeks still hang out. Being Greek is a great way to get involved on a campus as big as the U but it's not the only thing to get involved in.

Superblock Is the Way to Go

There are a lot of dorms at UMN but if you want to meet people and have the typical college experience, live in the Superblock. The Superblock consists of four dorms: Centennial, Pioneer, Frontier, and Territorial. The older buildings are Centen and Pio and tend to be a bit quieter. But these are the two dorms that have the dining halls in them. Frontier and Territorial are the newer dorms that have underground tunnel access to the dining halls. I know every year is different but there is a strong consistency with Territorial being the party dorm and Centen being the quiet dorm.

Not Much for Middle Ground Students

I understand many are more needy for money than I am which I do not take for granted but there are not many scholarships out there for those who still do need money but aren't considered as students who "need" money. Just because our parents make more doesn't mean they are helping us.

Exclusive, Yet Very Student Involved

The Greek community at the University of Minnesota is awesome. Most fraternities and sororities like to get students and other Greek groups involved with each other at events held throughout the year. I am in a fraternity that gives out a scholarship every year to a non- Greek student that meets the scholarships requirements.

Didn't Use Much

The facilties on campus are better than many others that I have visited. There is never a lack of computer labs and libraries for use. Also, it has one of the best athletic centers around. The fact that it is one of the top 3 largest universities in the U.S. means that it has a lot to offer for students.

GOOD Greek Students!

They all gather in part of the campus called 'Dinky Town'. There are hundreds of Greek houses and students live there. They have party in every Friday and Saturday night and seems they have so much fun. Therefore, there are so many restaurants and bars in Dinky Town. They do not disturb people near their houses and non-Greek students want to join them (Also me too!!). It would be great to be one of the Greek student!!

Minnesota Students

We are your typical, All-American Midwestern students. No, that does not mean we're "fat." Like any large school we have all types. Greek life is fairly popular here, so we have a lot of the typical "frat boys." Avoid The Library (it's a bar) if you don't want to be around that.

Greeks Are in, but Not Everything

Being Greek will increase your social life, who you know, what events you participate in, etc. But, in all honesty, most Sororities and Fraternities are drinking-centered. If you dont love to party, itll be an interesting acclamation to the Greek life. Fraternities are more party-centered than sororities, but all include lots of involvement but neither are too much of a status thing.

Twin Cities Are Awesome

The Twin Cities are definitely paternal twins. St. Paul is the sedate young lady, prim and proper, with the more traditional arts scene, the traditional Irish pubs, and the majestic mansions on the bluff. Minneapolis is the edgy twenty-something, with the modern art scene, the clubs, and the ultra modern architecture. Having the opportunity to experience both is a wonderful plus about the experience here.

Campus Housing

As a personal opinion I really like the Middlebrook dorm for on-campus housing. It's a little bit out of the way, but it's much quieter and each floor has its own social, tv and study lounges along with private bathrooms. Usually it's filled with the arts, honors and international students. The Superblock is definitely the place to be if you are looking for a louder scene and more of the usual college dorm with community bathrooms and such. The apartments are pretty spendy and you don't get much for what you could be getting for the same price off-campus, in my opinion.

Chemical Engineering Is Awesome

I'm a chemical engineering major at the University of Minnesota, and the program here is amazing. The professors are better and more fun than any I've ever had before, and the UROP program is a great way to start undergrad research and get to know your professors.

Process Was Terrible

The only reason I find the financial aid terrible is because apparently my family makes too much money to need financial aid. No scholarships were offered to me.

What's Financial Aid?

I thought that since I was going to a rather large school that I would get at least a sufficient amount of financial aid to help pay the hefty tuition bill that they are so kind to charge me. I was definitely wrong. I got a grand total of $500 for the entire year. Having always been an above average student in high school, but by far not the best student in terms of grades, I was hoping I would at least qualify for a few scholarships through the school. It appeared that unless you had a 4.0 GPA coming out of high school, you were not eligible for anything except the UPROMISE scholarship that they so happen give to everyone that makes under $100,000/year for income. Well, I'm sorry but $500 is not going to help much... It actually only pays for one semester's worth of books.

Be Careful

The school's financial aid process is a little bit difficult because they will examine carefully every information in your documents. If there is something catches their attention, they will review it for quite a long time before a final decision is made. And always remember that it is extremely difficult to contact with people from financial aid office directly and you need to schedule an appointment.
