College Prowler Take

The transportation opportunities largely make up for the lack of available and affordable parking in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Both the free University shuttle service and city busses are used by a large population of students. Other than riding Metro Transit buses, a student can also bike safely, because there are bike lanes on some of the major roads. Although the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus is one of the largest in the country, students quickly get used to walking, biking, and taking the bus daily.

The free shuttle service between the Minneapolis and St. Paul campus, within the Minneapolis campus, and to various spots off the Minneapolis campus, can be a terrific timesaver. And, the Metro Transit system will take you most anywhere you need to go within city limits, which is made all the more sweet by the fact that you can ride unlimited times for only $50 per semester with the purchase of a U-pass. The thing is, sometimes the city bus routes shut down at 11 p.m., and that can inhibit staying out late on a weekend. Also, the fact that most bus stops are scantily-sheltered, or not sheltered at all, can make winter bus riding a pain. It’s even more of a pain when the busses are inevitably late. The University provides a lot of great oppurtunities to use Metro Transit, and there are two 24-hour-a-day bus routes that run next to campus. However, the fact is, for an urban area, the Metro Transit system has been rated among the least effective in the nation.

Public transportation is decent. The U has campus shuttles that arrive more often than every 5 minutes. City buses run less frequently - around every 10 to 15 minutes. But it's easy to walk to anywhere on east or west bank. The lightrail is scheduled to run down Washington Avenue, straight through campus.

Public transportation is great!...

Public transportation is great! The U makes sure you have all the resources you need to get around the Twin Cities area. There are two main bus lines that run from uptown to St. Paul, which covers most of what you will need off campus.

There is a metro bus system. I used it last semester and it worked out well. The Web site is www.metrotransit.org. Visit that to see what kind of setup there is. I think it is pretty easy to use, and the frequently-traveled areas have buses come only ten minutes apart. Buy a semester U-Pass from the school. After 20 rides, you’ll get your money’s worth—that is ten round trips. It’s a very good deal.

Buy a U-Pass

A

MetroTransit is the public transportation provided by Minneapolis and St. Paul. The University of Minnesota, or the "U," offers a $96/semester (for now) "U-pass" that allows unlimited transportation on all MetroTransit vehicles. This means you get unlimited rides to and from classes on -6 degree days (no, they won't close school), into downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, and out to the Mall of America. There is a free bus system around campus, but it is rather limited and the city buses come much more frequently. It is totally worth it to buy a U-pass and learn the MetroTransit bus system.

U-Pass is the transit pass that provides unlimited rides 24 hours a day. It’s valid on all regular routes, as well as express, local, limited-stop, or Downtown Zone routes. It may not, however, be used on some special event services. All students are assessed a mandatory $10 transportation fee with their tuition. This transportation fee helps to support all Parking and Transportation services, including the campus shuttle system and U-Pass. In addition, students who decide to buy the pass pay a $50 user fee to get it. That user fee covers a full semester of unlimited bus rides. Ordering - Go to http://buspass.umn.edu and order U-Pass on line. Your U-Pass will be made (with your U-Card photo on it) and sent to you in the mail, or distributed at the U-Card Office (G22 in Coffman Memorial Union, 300 Washington), West Bank Cashier (101A Anderson Hall), or St. Paul Cashier (101 Coffey Hall). The U-Card office is open from 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. The West Bank Cashier is open from 8 a.m.–3 p.m. The St. Paul Cashier is open from 8 a.m.–3 p.m.
