Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Ole Miss is all about football and its traditions. Some changes have come over the past few years, though. For example, the former head coach felt that students waving Confederate flags were hindering his recruiting abilities, so the athletic department found a way to keep them out of the stadium without actually banning the flag itself. What most students don’t realize is that the flag wasn’t banned, only the stick that’s attached to it. Another icon that was removed from the stadium was our mascot, Col. Reb. The athletic director said that the image of an old Southern gentleman was also a hindrance to recruiting. It was put to a vote by the student body, and they voted in favor of Col. Reb. Nevertheless, he was banned from the stadium, though he still roams the Grove on game days.

There’s a canopy of trees covering a 10-acre grassy area on campus called the Grove, where students, alumni, and fans set up tents to tailgate on game days. Some families have been “Groving” in the same spot for more than 30 years. The tables in the tents are piled high with food, beverages, and an occasional flower arrangement, and some of the tents actually have chandeliers. Don’t worry that you won't have a tent. Lots of students join organizations that set up tents or find friends with family tents. People in the South, especially Mississippi, are hospitable and want to have all the friends they can.

Atmosphere Is Unbeatable

Sports are big at Ole Miss because we're an SEC school. All aspects of student involvement, school spirit, and support are insane. Intramurals are big and always have lots of participation. I only give it a B+ because our main sport is football, and our team has had a rough couple of years the past couple of years.

Low Morale for Football Team; High Campus Involvement

this past season has been one of the worst in school history. our football team has fallen flat on its face, metaphorically and physically speaking. the head coach was recently fired as well as the athletic directer asked to step down, so promise and hope are right around the corner. until then, the fan base and support from students and alumni are at a bare minimum. personal athletics, which includes intramural sports and using the gym, which is on campus, is in full swing. many students attend the Turner Center, either for racquet ball game, swimming match, quick workout, play basketball, or just a jog around the running track. numerous students take advantage of staying healthy and fit by using the Turner Center, which is complete with brand new and up to date equipment.

Besides Football, Pretty Good, Grove Still Amazing

Our football team is really depressing and has pretty much alienated its fanbase by consistently failing and not caring, but besides them the basketball and baseball teams are pretty good and going to games is fun! IM sports are easy to get into and diverse so lots of people do that. Even when our team sucks, the Grove is still the most amazing tailgating experience ever.

Soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball

School Spirit

Ole Miss is overflowing with school spirit, especially on gameday weekends. During football season, it’s a good idea for girls to stock up on red dresses and pearls and guys to buy a bundle of red and blue ties or a red polo shirt to wear to the games. The alumni have an amazing amount of school spirit as well. The crowd is dominated by alumni coming back for football games. Everyone just loves it so much that they can’t give it up. As alum Frank E. Everett Jr. once wrote, “The University is respected, but Ole Miss is loved. The University gives a diploma and regretfully terminates tenure, but one never graduates from Ole Miss.”

Getting Tickets

You can purchase season or single-game student football and basketball tickets at the Tad Smith Coliseum. Just be prepared to wait in line! Baseball tickets can be purchased online. Volleyball, softball and soccer tickets can be purchased at the fields one hour prior to game time.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Around campus, on Rowan Oak Trail (behind William Faulkner’s home) and at Avent Park and Patricia C. Lamar Park.

Did You Know?
  • For three years straight, Ole Miss student athletes had a higher graduation rate than the general student population.
  • In 2009, the No. 25 Ole Miss Rebels defeated the heavily-favored No. 7 Texas Tech Red Raiders to win the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. With Ole Miss winning 47-34, it was the highest-scoring game in Cotton Bowl history.
  • Ole Miss's biggest rivals are the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Louisiana State University Tigers. Each year, Ole Miss faces MSU in the Egg Bowl and LSU in the Magnolia Bowl.
