Other Options
- Ole Miss has a special plan called Ole Miss Express, or Flex Dollars, that works like a debit card. Your parents deposit money on your student ID, and then you can use it at the Union, off-campus restaurants, some local shops, vending machines, and to do your laundry. The main difference is that Flex can only be used to buy food, while Express can be used to buy other items as well. Just think: Flex=food, Express=everything.
College Prowler Take
It’s a good thing the meal plan is only required during freshman year, because it’s a waste for most people. Johnson Commons is only open at strange hours, and it’s all the way across campus from most of the dorms, which is really inconvenient if you’re hurrying to class and want to grab a bite to eat. The great thing, though, is Ole Miss Express, a program that off-campus food venders accept and use that makes the Flex Dollars capable of more than before. Everyone says that the food is okay in the Union and the Johnson Commons, but you rarely meet a person who prefers to eat there instead of their fraternity or sorority house, their apartment, or an off-campus restaurant. It’s probably safe say the food on campus isn’t that great. If you have to eat at one of these places, pick your food carefully—choose one of the food booths that prepares the food in front of you, since you will get more of your desires met than if you just picked up a prepackaged meal. Some places, like Chick-Fil-A and Bleecker Street Deli, do remain popular and seem to be at least a reliable alternative. If you’re looking for a good food choice that’s different, many students swear up and down that the sushi in the Union is fantastic. If you’re into it, check it out. Maybe it will live up to its reputation.

The Union is good, but the JC isn't. Don't get a huge meal plan unless you're a freshman. In fact, don't get a meal plan if you're not a freshman.

The types of food that Ole Miss has to offer is very diverse, but not as many people as you would think eat on campus. Campus food is pretty expensive.

The food on campus isn’t great, but it’s doable. I’d recommend eating at home. |

The Union offers a wide selection...
The Union offers a wide selection of food. Many students enjoy the addition of fresh sushi. There’s a deli, a Chick-fil-A, and an area that serves hot plates of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Union Galley Convenience Store also carries all your essentials: candy bars, chips, and drinks. Best of all, they all take the Ole Miss Express. Johnson Commons also provides a good cafeteria-style food option, where you can find everything from pizza and hamburgers to pasta and salads, though it does have limited serving hours. |

Did You Know? There’s a meal plan designed specifically for those students who plan to go through rush and join the Greek system. It allows you to only buy a meal plan for one semester, because most fraternities and sororities require you to pay for their own meal plans that include breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are some local clothing shops in Oxford that accept the Ole Miss Express as a form of payment.
