Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s a good thing the meal plan is only required during freshman year, because it’s a waste for most people. Johnson Commons is only open at strange hours, and it’s all the way across campus from most of the dorms, which is really inconvenient if you’re hurrying to class and want to grab a bite to eat. The great thing, though, is Ole Miss Express, a program that off-campus food venders accept and use that makes the Flex Dollars capable of more than before.

Everyone says that the food is okay in the Union and the Johnson Commons, but you rarely meet a person who prefers to eat there instead of their fraternity or sorority house, their apartment, or an off-campus restaurant. It’s probably safe say the food on campus isn’t that great. If you have to eat at one of these places, pick your food carefully—choose one of the food booths that prepares the food in front of you, since you will get more of your desires met than if you just picked up a prepackaged meal. Some places, like Chick-Fil-A and Bleecker Street Deli, do remain popular and seem to be at least a reliable alternative. If you’re looking for a good food choice that’s different, many students swear up and down that the sushi in the Union is fantastic. If you’re into it, check it out. Maybe it will live up to its reputation.

Dining on Campus

There are many options on campus of which the place I live, The Residential College is the best. I just wish that there were more healthy options for us. I really wish there was simply more options other than subway and chickfila and burgers. It makes me want to move off campus and make my own dining options

Quality of Food Lacking; Limited Choices

In the Student Union, the main dining hall for students lack tremendously in options for healthier as well as creative food ideas. There is only mexican, burgers, pizzas, chik-fil-a, as well as pasta. when it comes to something quick the food choices are very limited. the Johnson Commons dining hall lacks total food quality. The eggs for breakfast are powdered eggs, the salads are old and slimy and the overall atmosphere seems to be set back into the 80's. overall not my favorite place to eat. i tend to stay away from the Johnson Commons and if between classes, im hungry, i breakdown and buy a bag of chips to eat to satisfy me until i can get home to my groceries

Hit or Miss

The Union has good food, but you get tired of the same options every day. Then we have the JC, but it is inconsistent. The food was delicious at orientation, but once school started the JC substituted quantity for quality. You can either pay too much at the union for a good meal, or pay a decent amount at the JC for a less than satisfactory meal.

Off-Campus Places to Use Flex Money Proud Larry’s
Special Options Ole Miss has a special plan called Ole Miss Express, or Flex Dollars, that works like a debit card. Your parents deposit money on your student ID, and then you can use it at the Union, off-campus restaurants, some local shops, vending machines, and to do your laundry. The main difference is that Flex can only be used to buy food, while Express can be used to buy other items as well. Just think: Flex=food, Express=everything.
Did You Know?

There’s a meal plan designed specifically for those students who plan to go through rush and join the Greek system. It allows you to only buy a meal plan for one semester, because most fraternities and sororities require you to pay for their own meal plans that include breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

There are some local clothing shops in Oxford that accept the Ole Miss Express as a form of payment.
