Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At Ole Miss, freshmen are required to live on campus. The only exceptions are those who live in Oxford or who have a relative in town that they can stay with. Yes, some of you were looking forward to getting out of the house, living in your own apartment, and making your own rules, but living in the dorms isn’t all bad. Since you have no choice in the matter, you just have to deal with it. A bad attitude about living on campus is only going to ruin the experience for you. For those of you who are from out-of-state and don’t know anybody at Ole Miss, living in the dorms is a great experience that will allow you to meet lots of new people.

Before you get to your dorm, there are some rules you should know about that are going to be hard to live with. There’s a midnight visitor curfew Sunday through Thursday, and a 2 a.m. curfew on Fridays and Saturdays. No hot plates, candles, or incense are allowed. No alcohol is permitted in the dorms at all, and no smoking is allowed in any of the residence halls. Dorms are a great place to meet people, but they aren’t a great place to go barefoot. Make sure to bring a pair of flip-flops to wear in the showers. Bathrooms are communal and not likely to be as clean as the one you’re used to at home. They’re usually cleaned about once a week by the custodial staff, but what that really means is they hook up a hose to the water faucets and spray the bathroom down. It’s pretty gross, but you get used to it, and it makes you even more appreciative of clean bathrooms when you move out.

Gross!

Wealthy school with poor housing. However the fraternity and sorority houses are very nice and the University just built a very nice new dorm.

Dorms Are Decent

All the dorms on campus are good ones. I live in the nicest dorm, and the materialistic side is incredible. However, the social aspect at my dorm is really poor. Much more bonding and camaraderie occurs at the regular freshman dorm buildings.
