College Prowler Take
At Ole Miss, freshmen are required to live on campus. The only exceptions are those who live in Oxford or who have a relative in town that they can stay with. Yes, some of you were looking forward to getting out of the house, living in your own apartment, and making your own rules, but living in the dorms isn’t all bad. Since you have no choice in the matter, you just have to deal with it. A bad attitude about living on campus is only going to ruin the experience for you. For those of you who are from out-of-state and don’t know anybody at Ole Miss, living in the dorms is a great experience that will allow you to meet lots of new people. Before you get to your dorm, there are some rules you should know about that are going to be hard to live with. There’s a midnight visitor curfew Sunday through Thursday, and a 2 a.m. curfew on Fridays and Saturdays. No hot plates, candles, or incense are allowed. No alcohol is permitted in the dorms at all, and no smoking is allowed in any of the residence halls. Dorms are a great place to meet people, but they aren’t a great place to go barefoot. Make sure to bring a pair of flip-flops to wear in the showers. Bathrooms are communal and not likely to be as clean as the one you’re used to at home. They’re usually cleaned about once a week by the custodial staff, but what that really means is they hook up a hose to the water faucets and spray the bathroom down. It’s pretty gross, but you get used to it, and it makes you even more appreciative of clean bathrooms when you move out.

The dorms are a fun way to meet people, but they are very strict in an annoying way. You can't have visitors past a certain hour, and boys are never allowed to stay over night, so if you have a brother visiting, a guy friend, or a boyfriend visiting town, you can forget about him staying there. He will have to get a hotel or find a friend with an open couch. The food in the C-store is extremely overpriced. I lived in Crosby and Martin. Martin was much cleaner.

As a freshman, you will be...
As a freshman, you will be required to live in the dorms your first year. The dorm rooms are dirty and small, and expect to share a bathroom with 30 to 40 of your new friends. Get an apartment ASAP. The dorms at Ole Miss leave something to be desired, but the people you meet there will end up being some of your closest friends.

Dorms are just that—dorms. None are overly nice or too terrible. I lived in Crosby my freshman year, and I thought it was fine as far as first-year living goes. I would recommend moving off campus quickly. |

I only lived in the dorms freshman year, and then I moved off campus. Unless you love sharing showers, hearing doors slam throughout the night, and not having the opposite sex over, move off campus. |
