Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
As almost any person with any knowledge of civil rights history knows, Ole Miss has not always handled diversity well. In 1962, Ole Miss admitted its first black student, James Meredith, amidst a swirl of chaos and riots that resulted in two deaths. Meredith went on to be the first African-American graduate of Ole Miss, and things are much different now. Many minority students enroll here. In 2002–2003, Ole Miss had a yearlong celebration of their 40 years of an open-door policy. Without diversity, Ole Miss would be nothing, and all the awards and honors bestowed upon the College would not have been possible. The distasteful legacy of Ole Miss in the early 1960s has, thankfully, been left far behind. Though the minority population is still significantly less than the population of white students, Ole Miss has only been growing as a diverse campus for 40 years. Most campuses have been working much longer at it and are therefore more diverse. While celebrating “Forty Years of Open Doors at Ole Miss” several years ago, the school made new commitments to expanding itself and increasing minority enrollment. Even though the numbers don’t show that it’s diverse, Ole Miss is working on it. Student on campus can be certain that no matter what their gender, age or race is, they won’t feel left out. The poor grade in no way reflects any kind of prejudice or policy, but rather the statistical facts about the diversity of the student body. And the diversity is growing. Ole Miss is, above all else, a kind campus that makes sure to include everyone.

Diversity at the University of...
Diversity at the University of Mississippi is pretty rare. I think that a lot of students at Ole Miss are conservative, and many don't want to hear about others issues. It's very sad. At the same time, there are some who support different lifestyles and do not judge. It all depends on who you hang around with.

The campus is pretty diverse, but from my experience, diverse groups really don’t cross paths too much. There isn’t a hatred for different groups, but usually people stick together with their own friends and don’t attempt to meet many different people. |

No matter what your interests are at Ole Miss, there’s a place for you. While Ole Miss may not sport the most diverse-looking student population statistically, the diversity is there. You just have to look around. The University will be a great resource in helping you to meet a diverse crowd. They organize events such as dinner nights with the faculty, Greek Week (pairing Pan-Hellenic sororities and fraternities with NPHC sorority and fraternities), and international nights where students from other countries present elements of their culture, such as food, dance, and history. |

The campus is surprisingly diverse. Despite the University’s less than perfect history in regard to race, the school has a nice, eclectic group of students. There are a lot of international students, and African American enrollment is up. |
