College Prowler Take
Greek life at Ole Miss isn’t just another organization—it’s a way of life. The Greeks on campus aren’t just partiers who go out all the time; they’re in all the clubs and religious organizations, on the Student Programming Board, and busy with volunteering and conducting fundraisers. They’re basically everywhere, and they’re involved all over campus and in the city. The parties are great, but they’re only a small part of Greek life. The majority of a Greek student’s time is spent on rush practice, meetings, committees, study hall, and volunteering. Most Greek organizations require each member to earn a certain amount of points each semester through service hours and attendance at campus-wide lectures. Each fraternity and sorority has different rules to abide by, but almost all have some sort of academic policy that you must sign. If your parents are dubious about you joining one of these organizations, tell them about these positive aspects of the Greek system. If you’re even remotely thinking about going Greek, many students will tell you that it’s fun and you’ll meet tons of people. If you decide you’re not sure you want to commit to something that serious and time consuming, wait a year. You can always rush as a sophomore. Remember to be open-minded and don’t dislike people because they’re in a fraternity or a sorority—but don’t be friends with people just because they’re in one, either.

Greek life takes over school, and if you are part of one, it can be a great thing, but I can see how people who are not involved could get annoyed over how Greeks think the school belongs to them.

While Greek life once dominated...
While Greek life once dominated the social scene at Ole Miss and still has a large population, it’s not the be-all and end-all of the social scene. Greek life is like everything else—there are good days and there are bad ones. A major misconception about Greek life is that it’s all parties and fun, but the truth is that it’s time-consuming. Besides attending parties, there’s rush to be planned and practiced for, and many require study hall hours and hours of community service projects. |

While you don’t have to be Greek...
While you don’t have to be Greek to have fun, there are advantages to belonging to a Greek organization. There are those who take being Greek very seriously and those who are in it to have fun, but either way, I’d recommend joining one because I made some of the best friends of my life through my organization. It’s very nice to come in freshman year with a place to go and belong, and being Greek taught me a lot about responsibility and friendship. |

Greek life can be obnoxious, and if you live on campus, it dominates the social scene. Once I moved off campus, I realized that most people are not actually Greek. And the older the Greeks get, the more they realize how silly it is. |

Greek is chic. But a lot of people do it and complain about it the whole time. If you’re not familiar with the system, I would recommend giving it a year and then making the decision to join or not. |
