Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At Ole Miss, there’s very little to worry about in terms of safety. It seems that anyone can walk around campus or to their car at night and not worry about whether they are going to be abducted, mugged, or injured. Even though walking around alone at night, no matter where you are, is not the brightest idea, there are always times when you have no other option. It’s during those times that being in a small town like Oxford is very comforting.

Even though Oxford is very safe, the University still takes extra precautions to ensure students’ safety. The University Police Department, or UPD, has a program called Rebel Patrol that will come and pick up students anywhere on campus after dark and take them back to their residence halls. There is also a 24-hour patrol that watches out for any suspicious behavior. Combined with Oxford’s small-town, community atmosphere, students feel very safe at and around Ole Miss. It’s wonderful to have all these services at your disposal, but the best idea is to go out with a group and stay with them. There’s safety in numbers, especially for women. If you know that you and others in your group of friends are going to be drinking, make sure to designate a driver. There’s no sense in making a fun situation dangerous to you and others in the community.

Very Safe

Security is excellent on campus at all times. I often have to go to the library at night and there is always a security officer somewhere in sight.

Pretty Safe

I take night classes on campus that get out well after it is dark, and I have on multiple occasions walked out to my vehicle without fear of being accosted. Granted I am on a satellite campus with a slightly older demographic (non-traditional students especially for night classes) which is a group with a lower crime rate anyway. Even among those in my age group though there does not seem to be an overwhelming fear of crime especially among the females. Now this is in no way to say that you should leave your vehicle unlocked or not pay attention when you walk to your vehicle after class-that would be just careless. However, you can do so with the knowledge that there is a 99% chance that nothing will happen to you. There is a security office on the camera where an officer is always set up watching the cameras, and there is always a car patrolling the parking lot.

Very Safe

I have always felt safe when waking around on campus, even at night. Since I live in a dorm, my main safety issue would be my heath. The dorms aren't always very clean. To avoid risky situations my roommate and I always lock our door.
