Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Great news! As a freshman in college, the nightlife is guaranteed to be more exciting than it was in high school. The parties are great, as are the bars that allow in 18 year-olds. You’re constantly meeting new people, and everything is fresh. It’s great, but after five months or so of doing the same thing every week, you just want a new bar. The parties are great, but there will be lulls, especially during the cold winter months.

Just when you thought that you couldn’t take another minute of the same places over and over comes the ultimate night—your 21st birthday! Everyone gets dressed up, eats dinner, and goes to the bars that they’ve been waiting to see for the past two years. After this magical night of drinking all around the Square, the nightlife gets a little bland, especially the frat parties that seem like just the same old thing. However, you can always spice things up by going to the casinos in Tunica or by going out in Memphis, which is only an hour and a half away and has a lot of clubs. When you look back, you won’t remember the nights you were ready to pull your hair out because no one would decide where to go. It will be the nights when the weather was just right, you were wearing a great outfit, and that guy or girl that you were eying at the bar came over to talk to you.

The Nightlife RULES!!

With all the night spots located in one area, it makes a night on the square one to remember everytime you go. With sports bars to dance clubs, one is to surely find what ones looking for. You can walk, take a cab or park in one of the many parking lots around the town square it makes Oxford's Town Square a spot to hit. Plus, one can not complain about how pretty the girls are at Ole Miss.

Nightlife at the University of Mississippi

Frat Row is a major place for undergraduate students to party until they turn 21, because of how easy it is to drink while underage there. The Square is where most bars in Oxford are located. Undergrads sometimes go, but it's relatively hard sometimes to drink while under 21 so it's mainly popular with older students.. or freshman who haven't learned their wasting their time. During football season most people drink before the game in the Grove, and this is a major part of life during the Fall semester. Greek life being such a major thing means that Frat parties and events are the biggest social events for Ole Miss students.. and the biggest places to party.

Ole Miss, Enough Said

When you think of parties and colleges, Ole Miss undoubtedly comes to mind, for good reason. Parties of all sorts are a big part of the Ole Miss community, but if you are not into that sort of thing, there is still plenty to do. Parties are big here, but they are not everything. However, should you decide to go to the square, there are plenty of taxis and buses to make sure you get home safe.

Facts

Bar Prowler

Well, party animals and dance fiends, there are no clubs in Oxford. We do have a great bar scene, though, with some great music and drink specials. Due to a tragedy a few years ago, a lot of the bars have gone to 21-and-over only and really tightened their security.

Organization Parties

All of the fraternities have parties, and everyone is welcome. No one else really has parties for their organization.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Oasis/Sneaky Tiki

Monday–Tuesday cocktails and appetizers only. Great tropical atmosphere with a real Tiki bar outside. With two bars, you can get a drink pronto. It’s great to just sit outside in the summer and have a Mai Tai to refresh your tired taste buds.

309A North Lamar Blvd.

(662) 232-1903

Parrish’s

A great place for an afternoon drink. The bartenders make a pastime out of sucking unsuspecting victims in and making them feel so at home that they never want to leave. Wear whatever you want, because everyone else will be dressed for comfort.

1101 East Jackson Ave.

(662) 281-3325

The Longshot

Located right next door to Parrish’s. With live music, this oddly-shaped bar gets pretty packed. If you don’t think you’ll remember the night, this joint has a photo booth to help you commemorate any occasion.

Oxford Sq.

(662) 236-7063

Murff’s

As it clearly states on the sign out front: “The Center of Life.” It’s relaxed and never so packed that you can’t move. There are a couple of pool tables and a dartboard downstairs. Try the back porch; it’s great for just hanging out on lazy nights.

1210 Harrison Ave.

(662) 234-7558

RibCage

This is a restaurant with a bar downstairs that has nightly drink specials. Upstairs, it’s a restaurant; downstairs, it’s a dark little bar with great pitcher and tap specials. Don’t do any primping to come here. Guys, if you’re out to just watch a game, this is your kind of place. It’s very rugged and masculine.

311 South Lamar Blvd.

(662) 238-2929

Two Stick Market

Always has some form of music, except during the ever-popular Tuesday Night Trivia. Tuesdays are great for the dorks-at-heart who like to party with everyone else. What better way to expand your mind while killing brain cells? Keeping with the Asian theme isn’t needed when getting dressed, but when drinking, give the sake a whirl.

1007 Harrison Ave.

(662) 236-6639

Pearl Street Pasta

A great restaurant that turns into an excellent bar at night. When getting dressed, don’t just toss on anything, but don’t waste your best outfits on this bar, either. When it just gets too hot inside, take a step out onto the patio in the alley.

308 South Lamar Blvd.

(662) 234-7525

Proud Larry’s

The hottest music spot. Everyone knows they have the best music around, from heavy garage rock, to the ever-popular jam bands and bluegrass groups. Anyone who’s touring and knows what they’re doing will be coming here. To fit in with this crowd, don’t bother changing out of your comfy, loose cords and T-shirt.

Buffalo Café

Not on the Square, but when all else fails, if you are hungry and looking for some cheap wine—this is your spot. They also aren’t hard on carding (at least to get in the doors).

1101 Jackson Ave. West

(662) 232-2772

The Burgundy Room

Located upstairs from Old Venice, this bar has everything the older Greek crowd could want for a cool fall day or in the spring when things are just warming up. They have one of the only two outdoor balconies in Oxford. With a limited amount of space, there’s never a live band, but the bartenders do a great job acting as DJs. This is the kind of place where you need to kick off the flip-flops and toss on one of those great outfits you picked up for a special occasion.

1112½ Van Buren Ave.

(662) 236-6866

208 South Lamar

Great happy hour specials. There’s more fine food than drinks, so if you’re looking for a bar without food to hassle you, try somewhere else.

208 South Lamar

(662) 234-0005

Bouré

Upscale restaurant turned upscale bar at night. With cool, low lighting, it provides a very mysterious mood. Those looking for some peace and quiet come here. You can talk in a whisper and still hear your sweetheart next to you.

309 North Lamar Blvd.

(662) 234-1968

The Jubilee

What used to be Jubilee has now doubled in size and gotten a face-lift. It’s no longer a little hippie bar where everyone is welcome. Not that it isn’t welcoming now, but it has a more upscale look, and you have to slip into attire that’s a bit more elegant than jeans and a T-shirt.

1002 Jackson Ave. E.

(662) 236-3757

The Library Bar & Grill

One of the great music spots. Anytime you hear that they’re selling tickets, buy them, because you’ll hear some great bands that will be well-known in the future. Other than that, it’s kind of smoky and attracts a younger crowd trying to be cool.

120 South 11th St.

(662) 234-1411

City Grocery

The best bar around. Everyone—from Ole Miss students to parents to local heroes—gathers here to have drinks at one of the two bars. There’s a balcony, and it’s packed on weekends, but no matter what you’re wearing, you won’t feel out of place. If you stay at the bar for enough years and order enough drinks, you may be one of the lucky few who get their names engraved on plaques that grace corners of the bar.

152 Courthouse Sq.

(662) 232-8080

Downtown Grille

Those who frequent it know this uptight, posh joint as just “the Grille.” Dress to impress, and be ready to throw elbows to get to the bar when you enter. It gets really packed with alumni wanting to revisit their youth, as well as students on game weekends—so be ready to see some old men act really stupid.

110 Courthouse Sq.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

The Library, The Levee and Illusions cater to the under-21 crowd, and they usually have DJs or live music.
