College Prowler Take
Great news! As a freshman in college, the nightlife is guaranteed to be more exciting than it was in high school. The parties are great, as are the bars that allow in 18 year-olds. You’re constantly meeting new people, and everything is fresh. It’s great, but after five months or so of doing the same thing every week, you just want a new bar. The parties are great, but there will be lulls, especially during the cold winter months. Just when you thought that you couldn’t take another minute of the same places over and over comes the ultimate night—your 21st birthday! Everyone gets dressed up, eats dinner, and goes to the bars that they’ve been waiting to see for the past two years. After this magical night of drinking all around the Square, the nightlife gets a little bland, especially the frat parties that seem like just the same old thing. However, you can always spice things up by going to the casinos in Tunica or by going out in Memphis, which is only an hour and a half away and has a lot of clubs. When you look back, you won’t remember the nights you were ready to pull your hair out because no one would decide where to go. It will be the nights when the weather was just right, you were wearing a great outfit, and that guy or girl that you were eying at the bar came over to talk to you.

There aren't many parties on campus. The bars off campus are for students 21-and-up. The clubs off campus admit students over 18. Some good spots are Illusions Sports Bar or The Library. Trust me, it's nothing like an ordinary library!

Most of the parties on campus...
Most of the parties on campus happen in either the dorms or frat houses. Many of the clubs are 18-and-up and contain mostly freshmen. So if want to get away from the younger crowd, go to bars that are for 21-and-up.

The bars are crowded since there are so few. Frat parties are nasty.

Parties on campus are always exciting, but as you get older, you may want to move on to the Square (City Grocery, for example). There’s a different atmosphere on the Square, and it’s always fun to get dressed up and go out. |

The parties on campus are the...
The parties on campus are the heart of fraternity social life. Each fraternity has its own weekend of parties in the name of celebrating influential members of respective fraternities. And most of them have large home game weekend events. There are essentially two types of bar settings: ‘kiddie bars’ which allow 18 and up, and 21-and-over bars where older students hang out. All of them offer lots of music and different atmospheres. |
Facts
Bar Prowler
Well, party animals and dance fiends, there are no clubs in Oxford. We do have a great bar scene, though, with some great music and drink specials. Due to a tragedy a few years ago, a lot of the bars have gone to 21-and-over only and really tightened their security.
Organization Parties
All of the fraternities have parties, and everyone is welcome. No one else really has parties for their organization.
Bar Listings
A great place for an afternoon drink. The bartenders make a pastime out of sucking unsuspecting victims in and making them feel so at home that they never want to leave. Wear whatever you want, because everyone else will be dressed for comfort. Parrish’s 1101 East Jackson Ave. (662) 281-3325
A great restaurant that turns into an excellent bar at night. When getting dressed, don’t just toss on anything, but don’t waste your best outfits on this bar, either. When it just gets too hot inside, take a step out onto the patio in the alley. Pearl Street Pasta 308 South Lamar Blvd. (662) 234-7525
Always has some form of music, except during the ever-popular Tuesday Night Trivia. Tuesdays are great for the dorks-at-heart who like to party with everyone else. What better way to expand your mind while killing brain cells? Keeping with the Asian theme isn’t needed when getting dressed, but when drinking, give the sake a whirl. Two Stick Market 1007 Harrison Ave. (662) 236-6639
As it clearly states on the sign out front: “The Center of Life.” It’s relaxed and never so packed that you can’t move. There are a couple of pool tables and a dartboard downstairs. Try the back porch; it’s great for just hanging out on lazy nights. Murff’s 1210 Harrison Ave. (662) 234-7558
Great happy hour specials. There’s more fine food than drinks, so if you’re looking for a bar without food to hassle you, try somewhere else. 208 South Lamar 208 South Lamar (662) 234-0005
Located right next door to Parrish’s. With live music, this oddly-shaped bar gets pretty packed. If you don’t think you’ll remember the night, this joint has a photo booth to help you commemorate any occasion. The Longshot Oxford Sq. (662) 236-7063
Located upstairs from Old Venice, this bar has everything the older Greek crowd could want for a cool fall day or in the spring when things are just warming up. They have one of the only two outdoor balconies in Oxford. With a limited amount of space, there’s never a live band, but the bartenders do a great job acting as DJs. This is the kind of place where you need to kick off the flip-flops and toss on one of those great outfits you picked up for a special occasion. The Burgundy Room 1112½ Van Buren Ave. (662) 236-6866
Monday–Tuesday cocktails and appetizers only. Great tropical atmosphere with a real Tiki bar outside. With two bars, you can get a drink pronto. It’s great to just sit outside in the summer and have a Mai Tai to refresh your tired taste buds. Oasis/Sneaky Tiki 309A North Lamar Blvd. (662) 232-1903
Not on the Square, but when all else fails, if you are hungry and looking for some cheap wine—this is your spot. They also aren’t hard on carding (at least to get in the doors). Buffalo Café 1101 Jackson Ave. West (662) 232-2772
One of the great music spots. Anytime you hear that they’re selling tickets, buy them, because you’ll hear some great bands that will be well-known in the future. Other than that, it’s kind of smoky and attracts a younger crowd trying to be cool. The Library Bar & Grill 120 South 11th St. (662) 234-1411
The best bar around. Everyone—from Ole Miss students to parents to local heroes—gathers here to have drinks at one of the two bars. There’s a balcony, and it’s packed on weekends, but no matter what you’re wearing, you won’t feel out of place. If you stay at the bar for enough years and order enough drinks, you may be one of the lucky few who get their names engraved on plaques that grace corners of the bar. City Grocery 152 Courthouse Sq. (662) 232-8080
The hottest music spot. Everyone knows they have the best music around, from heavy garage rock, to the ever-popular jam bands and bluegrass groups. Anyone who’s touring and knows what they’re doing will be coming here. To fit in with this crowd, don’t bother changing out of your comfy, loose cords and T-shirt.
This is a restaurant with a bar downstairs that has nightly drink specials. Upstairs, it’s a restaurant; downstairs, it’s a dark little bar with great pitcher and tap specials. Don’t do any primping to come here. Guys, if you’re out to just watch a game, this is your kind of place. It’s very rugged and masculine. RibCage 311 South Lamar Blvd. (662) 238-2929
Those who frequent it know this uptight, posh joint as just “the Grille.” Dress to impress, and be ready to throw elbows to get to the bar when you enter. It gets really packed with alumni wanting to revisit their youth, as well as students on game weekends—so be ready to see some old men act really stupid. Downtown Grille 110 Courthouse Sq. (662) 234-2659
Upscale restaurant turned upscale bar at night. With cool, low lighting, it provides a very mysterious mood. Those looking for some peace and quiet come here. You can talk in a whisper and still hear your sweetheart next to you. Bouré 309 North Lamar Blvd. (662) 234-1968
What used to be Jubilee has now doubled in size and gotten a face-lift. It’s no longer a little hippie bar where everyone is welcome. Not that it isn’t welcoming now, but it has a more upscale look, and you have to slip into attire that’s a bit more elegant than jeans and a T-shirt. The Jubilee 1002 Jackson Ave. E. (662) 236-3757
What to Do if You're Not 21
The Library, The Levee and Illusions cater to the under-21 crowd, and they usually have DJs or live music.
