College Prowler Take

At Ole Miss, there’s very little to worry about in terms of safety. It seems that anyone can walk around campus or to their car at night and not worry about whether they are going to be abducted, mugged, or injured. Even though walking around alone at night, no matter where you are, is not the brightest idea, there are always times when you have no other option. It’s during those times that being in a small town like Oxford is very comforting.

Even though Oxford is very safe, the University still takes extra precautions to ensure students’ safety. The University Police Department, or UPD, has a program called Rebel Patrol that will come and pick up students anywhere on campus after dark and take them back to their residence halls. There is also a 24-hour patrol that watches out for any suspicious behavior. Combined with Oxford’s small-town, community atmosphere, students feel very safe at and around Ole Miss. It’s wonderful to have all these services at your disposal, but the best idea is to go out with a group and stay with them. There’s safety in numbers, especially for women. If you know that you and others in your group of friends are going to be drinking, make sure to designate a driver. There’s no sense in making a fun situation dangerous to you and others in the community.

I feel comfortable walking around campus at night, but being a girl, I wouldn't do it alone. I am sure that is how it is in most places though.

I feel that the campus is very secure, and although I never walk alone at night, I never feel threatened or scared to be out past dark. People are always willing to make sure that you get back home safely.

There are definitely places on campus that you should avoid at night by yourself, but luckily, you never have walk alone. There’s security at the library to walk you to your car if you need it. You can also call the University Police Department to take you where you need to go, if you feel unsafe. This isn’t to say that the campus is unsafe, but there are certainly measures in place to help keep you safe. The police cars patrol campus throughout the day, looking for suspicious behavior, and essentially making their presence known.

Ole Miss basically has a safe campus. I always felt safe running at night, walking around alone on campus at night, or hanging out in a dorm. But Cobra Security, who is in charge of security on campus, is not exactly highly visible, especially during a sporting event. I always just hoped nothing ever happened during those times. This is a serious issue in regard to safety.

It’s a safe place. There have been isolated incidents on campus, but if you take due caution, you will be safe.
