College Prowler Take
Fall in Mississippi, and especially in Oxford, is beautiful. The leaves change color, and the weather is usually pretty warm until mid- to late-October or early November. Winter is rather mild in Oxford compared to other places, but it gets pretty cold around January, so bring a warm coat and plenty of scarves. It rarely snows, but sometimes it ices overnight, and school is cancelled. When the tiniest threat of winter weather comes, everyone races to the grocery stores to buy all of the milk, bread, and beer in case they get snowed in. There was a huge ice storm in North Mississippi more than 15 years ago, and people who were here then are still talking about it. A lot of students took anything that seemed like it would be sled-worthy out to the huge hill behind Stewart dorm. Apparently, the lunch trays that had been “borrowed” from Johnson Commons worked best. Spring is fabulous, but it doesn’t usually come until April. In the spring, everyone comes out to play in the Grove and do anything outdoors that they can. When walking around the Square in the spring, it’s commonplace to see the bar balconies packed to capacity any time of day. Summers are hotter than Hades! It’s not the heat that’ll get you, but the humidity. Mississippi has those wonderful summers where you walk out of your air-conditioned home or classroom to be hit in the face by heat and humidity that immediately cause perspiration to soak your clothes. This is the worst thing about Mississippi weather. You try to get dressed up and look great for a date, and then your hair gets all frizzy or you’re burning up in those khaki pants. However, the hotter months are when most people are home for the summer and suffering somewhere else anyway.

I would make sure that you pack for all kinds of weather. We can have 80-degrees days in December and snow in March. The weather really varies.

It can get extremely hot in the summer and fairly cold in the winter, so I would suggest bringing both types of clothing with you. Classrooms and the library are usually pretty chilly, so even in the spring, I’d bring an extra sweater to class. |

It’s hot as anything in the summer. In August, you will walk to class, and your clothes will be drenched by the time you sit down. The late summers in Oxford always make me so lethargic. The heat and humidity drains you. But, the winter months are nice, and it does not get too cold. And unfortunately, it never snows. |
