Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is a lot of diversity on campus. People come from all over the country to attend Mizzou's prestigious journalism program, and with that, the University gets a lot of people from different races, economic statuses, and religious backgrounds.

Everyone seems to be treated well on campus. The University has an LGBT group as well as religiously affiliated groups. International students are very prominent, as well. Usually, international students stay on campus and live in the same dorm, but they assimilate well into campus life and the downtown social scene. Overall, students are tolerant and accepting of others' views, religions, races, and sexual preferences.

A Bit More Diversity

We as a school need more diversity. I'm not saying that Mizzou doesn't have a wide variety of students that attend, and fill it's classrooms but I think that we need more. There are, of course, a number of organizations that promote diversity among students but I don't know if its a lack of minority students or a lack of effort but I believe it could use a lot of work. From my personal experience the minority students stick to their own group/huddle and don't attempt to branch out much. For instance the University of Missouri's African American students have their own homecoming in addition to the school wide one, which brought much controversy this year. As I've said there are many clubs to join and be merry with but not enough SHOUT OUTS to let us know that they are here.

Diverse Students

there is a great mix of cultures on Mizzou's campus. While white is the majority, there are many others, and I have never seen anyone be discriminated

How diverse is the student body in the following areas?

How diverse is your personal circle of friends in the following areas?

How accepting is the campus community as a whole toward someone who falls into the minority (ethnic, sexual, or religious)?

How would you best describe your personal political beliefs?

How would you best describe the political beliefs of campus as a whole?

Facts

Gay Pride

The Board of Curators recently added sexual orientation to their non-discrimination policy. Widespread hate crimes, intimidation, and violence against gays have never been reported.

Political Activity

There are political clubs for any political leaning, but some are more active than others. The College Republicans attract big-name speakers to lecture, while the College Democrats are kind of in a rut. There are also clubs available for Libertarian or Green Party-leaning students (sorry, no Reform Party club yet). Left-of-center groups attract a lot of attention with demonstrations and publicity stunts once in a while, like when a new war breaks out.

Economic Status

Since the majority of students who come to Mizzou is from the state of Missouri, an economically diverse state, there is a rather economically diverse student body. There are a lot of students who come from the St. Louis and Kansas City suburbs, as well as people who have a more modest upbringing in rural parts of the state.

Most Common Religions

Christianity is the most prominent religion at Mizzou.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Legion of Black Collegians is the most active club for African Americans on campus. They have a lot of events and activities for black students on campus.
