Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek life is very big on the Mizzou campus, especially during football season and Homecoming. They hold events just about every month, and members are required to attend meetings every week. This can be very overwhelming for incoming freshmen. Frats are a little more relaxed with their rules, whereas sororities are very particular about everyone following the rules. The members usually live in the dorms the first semester and then move in to the house after they have been accepted into the frat/sorority.

Many people do not particularly like sororities and frats because the people in them act rude and sometimes won't associate with people who aren't in their frat/sorority or in a frat/sorority in general.

Greek Life

Greek life is a great way to get involved. There are a lot of different sororities and fraternities at the University of Missouri. Finding a great place to call home and find friends similar to yourself is easy. The social atmosphere of campus revolves around Greek life, but it is not the only social way to get involved but a big part. Other students who are not involved in the Greek community either really want to be or really dislike the people involved. It goes one side or another.

Is Everyone Greek?

No, not everyone is involved with Greek life, but a good portion is. Around 20% of the students at MU are either in a sorority or fraternity. There are a lot of social gatherings, and like most colleges, the males are required to pay to get into frat parties. I am not involved in the Greek life so I do not know much. I do know that there are a lot of different sororities and fraternities to join on campus, just look into them because some have bad reputations and others, such as sororities or fraternities that are strictly scholarly, that have great reputations.

Exclusive for a reason.

Mizzou Greek life may seem exclusive, and for good reason. The fraternity men go through a lot of learning and training to become initiated, which no NG would understand. We bond with our brothers and learn about each other so quickly and it creates friendships that can last a life time. The sorority women also go through a lot, and are some of the most involved people on campus. We exclude only those who try and look down on us and don't respect the process we went through. I myself have many NG friends who I treat just like anyone else, and many of them ask how to get involved and rush for the spring. College is what you make of it and Greeks at Mizzou want to make the most of their time here. Through volunteering, homecoming, intramurals, and academics the Greek community participates in all, and have the ability to balance them.

Most NG guys hate fraternities because they think the men in them are only accepting of other greeks, when it's only that we know what each other has been through and hate the stereotypes many have of us. While NG girls dislike sorority women because they either didn't get into the house they wanted or didn't rush because they "don't like girls". All of us accept NG's until they bash us for "paying for our friends" and think we're only interested in partying. Overall those who have bad things to say about Greek Life here at Mizzou obviously aren't in it, because they don't understand the time it takes nor the benefits you receive from your hard work. As a whole we participate more and therefore have more pride in not only our house, but our university. Proud to be a Tiger and proud to be Greek.
