Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The only big worry on campus is the craziness of some drivers, due to the fact that Mizzou is a closed campus for most of the day. Students forget that they can't just step off the sidewalk onto the street as they do throughout the day, so being careful when walking is essential. Mizzou is a relatively safe campus; there are incidents here and there, but they are quickly taken care of by the University of Missouri Police Department (or MUPD for short). Students are alerted by email whenever there is an incident on campus or in the surrounding area. MUPD does a good job keeping students informed and protected. The University also has blue lights set up all around campus. Blue lights are pillars that are connected directly to the police. Students in danger can just press the button, and a police officer will respond in moments and talk the student through the blue light if needed. Some things to always remember: keep a level head, be very aware at parties, and never go out after midnight without a buddy (as silly as that sounds—it helps keep you safe).

Full-time students at the University are automatically charged for a health center fee. This is a great program for students that are far away from home. The MU Student Health Center is always available; the only thing that students should make sure of is that they make an appointment beforehand. The doctors at the health center are knowledgeable and caring, as is the staff. Besides the physical health aspect, Mizzou also offers a therapeutic element. Students who are stressed out or just need someone to talk to can make an appointment with a therapist.

MUPD--Serious Business

The University of Missouri is so big that it has its own police department. It seems as though every corner has a station with a button that contacts the MUPD. Although we are a dry campus, MU knows that there are under age drinkers so they created a free system for students who cannot drive home or, for those who do not drink, are simply too far from home. This service is great on a late night when I am on one side of campus, needing to get to the other, and do not want to walk home alone in the dark. I feel completely safe on the Mizzou campus.

Crime and Safety

During my first semester at Mizzou the school experienced someone trying to burn down the library (which resulted in certain sections being shut down-highly inconvenient!), people getting mugged and beat up, and a suicide. During the day the school seems really safe and inviting but I really hate when I'm caught walking home at night by myself! Needless to say I don't always feel safe.

I Feel Safe on Campus

I always feel safe on campus, even when I had to walk to a parking garage at 4 AM after the homecoming centennial to go to a regatta.
