Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Always keep an umbrella handy. You’ll be sorry if you have to rush over to Brady Commons in a Missouri-style downpour with your geology book shielding you from the rain.
  • Don’t give money to homeless people in downtown Columbia. Instead, donate money to a local food bank or charity.
  • Go to class.
  • If you see the cops coming through the door of a house party, put your beer down, and if they ask whether it’s your house, shake your head, don't panic, and never run!
  • You should leave your mementos from high school at home, especially yearbooks. Those suckers are heavy, especially when you have to lug them onto an airplane.
Tips to Succeed
  • Be nice to people—this isn’t high school anymore. Being friendly and courteous to your peers could pay off when you’re homeless and need a job reference.
  • Don’t take any hits of acid—or any hard drugs that you’ve never heard of before.
  • Exercise. Exercising keeps your mind focused and your body healthy.
  • Get lots of sleep before an exam—if you have an exam planned, make sure you don’t drink 10 shots of Jägermeister the night before. You will most likely not score well.
  • Study in the library—your dorm room can be incredibly distracting. Ellis Library is peaceful, quiet, and the perfect place to cram for your next exam.

Flexibility!

I am in a PhD program here at Mizzou and I have seen that you don't have to be a genius to succeed if you work hard. Establishing that sort of reputation here has motivated my authorities to work with me on my weaknesses and most other programs are not that flexible. Thus, I see that as being a good characteristic about getting an education here and it is still very respectable as well. They don't give away degrees like no one should, you have to earn them but if you get stuck while showing effort, there are sources allowable here that facilitate assistance towards your issue(s).
