College Prowler Take

So, you’re sick of uptight RAs with their rules and regulations? Well, you’re not alone. Students at Mizzou tend to concur that living off campus is the best option after freshman year. There are a ton of different locales close to and far away from campus, but either option has wide-range accessibility. East Campus is especially popular, since the area consists of actual houses. Many of Mizzou’s freakishly out-of-control parties are thrown there. And, while there have been reported problems with the management at Jefferson Commons, the option of living there is still considerably better than living in the dorms.

On top of the aura of freedom that accompanies breaking the shackles of dorm life, off-campus housing is usually much cheaper. Of course, students also must worry about utilities, paying the rent to landlords, and turning down their music while the neighbors are trying to sleep. But, let’s face it—that’s part of real life, and Mizzou’s off-campus living is the first step towards that.

Your first year, you have to live in dorms, but after that, apartments and duplexes aren’t bad. It’s a fairly big town with a lot to offer.

Off-campus housing is very convenient. There are actually three colleges in Columbia, so with a population of students that high, real estate is the number one business in town! Apartments range from $200 per month for one-bedroom apartments to $800 for duplexes or houses. You can find pretty much anything to fit what you are looking for. There are two commuter parking lots, with buses that run every 15 minutes to campus. It’s really pretty convenient.

A lot of people enjoy the dorms, but have their fill after one year. It’s a different situation for everybody, so if you feel like you’re ready to make the move, do it—I would advise doing it. It’s better than spending a year being miserable with 80 drunk freshmen neighbors.
