Greek Life at University of Missouri

Good Relations

Greek life is a big deal at Mizzou. Many of the non-Greeks and Greeks have a good relationship and Greeks will take NGs to their formals and socials and stuff. There are plenty of the other ways to have fun, so its not a huge deal to be in one or not to be in one, but there is no getting away from it. Greek life is a pretty great experience for those evolved in it though. There are tons of added opportunities.

Greek Life's Benefits

As a Greek, I would obviously advocate for anyone to join the Greek community for several reasons: Philanthropy, Fun, and further bettering yourself. The Greek Life here at Mizzou is huge on philanthropy, and every house has their own event to raise money for their own cause just like chapters do all across the nation. We also do community service for Homecoming and Greek Week as a whole, getting some good volunteering hours. Greek life is fun as well, meeting new people, competing against other houses, and obviously partying. And further bettering yourself; my chapter is a values driven chapter, so becoming a better man was along the lines of member development, and it it's so true. I've become a better man living by those values. Any Greek chapter will do the same, and I highly recommend it, because it will be the best decision you ever made.

Dorm Living and Atmosphere

The dorm living at the University of Missouri is superb. They are kept clean, and there are always so many activities throughout the dorm building that its never boring. The social atmosphere is great as well. Everyone gets along so well, and we always have our doors open and just randomly stop into other peoples rooms to chat and hang out for awhile. The convenience of living on campus is amazing. You're close to everything, even the shops and restaurants downtown, and you never have to worry about having to drive and waste gas money to get somewhere.

Radio-Television

Radio-TV Journalism is demanding, but the best in the nation. The professors are helpful, the opportunities are endless, and students are prepared upon graduation. The university owns an NBC affiliate station that broadcasts around mid-Missouri. Students report, write, produce, and anchor at the station.

Drug Scene Not Too Crazy

I'd say most Mizzou students drink pretty regularly. It all depends on who you hang out with, there are some people into drugs and some just into drinking.

Plenty to Do

Lots of parties going on off campus. Also plenty of close bars. There are a few clubs. Plenty to do for underage, there is a bowling alley, 2 movie theaters, and I believe a mini-golf place.

Student Center Is a Dream

I'm at the University of Missouri - Columbia, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my college career thus far. The Student Center provides countless tutors, writing advisors, and professors willing to work with students needing help. I am beginning my Sophmore, so I have only been able to take gen eds, but those classes have been exciting and rewarding.

Rockin' the Jschool

We've got the first Journalism school this side of the Mississippi, and the best! We work by using the Missouri Method: a series of hands-on experiences and classes that allow you to make your first job mistakes while you're still in college. The Mizzou Mafia (alumni) is very instrumental in helping with job placement. Our facilities and technology are absolutely phenomenal.

Students at Mizzou

I would say that it depends on if the students are Greek or not. If they are Greek, they most likely care more about what they look like, wear, and who they are seen with. They are also most likely more social and enjoy partying more often than non-greeks. They do have strong bonds with other Greeks in the Greek system, but most likely don't have many friends outside of the Greek system unless they went to high school together or lived in the dorms together freshman year. The students that are non-Greek are more laid back most of the time and are more serious about the studying aspect of college rather than the social life. I feel as if the non-Greek students I know and have met are very nice and easy to get along with.

It's Big 12!!

We are one of the better schools in the Big 12. But don't expect many championships or anything. We expect to win and complain a lot when we lose. Either way, we drink.

Excellent Housing Options

I lived in Defoe-Graham my freshman year (and will be returning in the fall), and it was an amazing experience. It's basically in the center of campus and nothing to too far of a walk. The dorm itself was recently renovated and looks very nice from the outside and inside. I can't say from experience how living in the other dorms is, but they have all been renovated and look very nice as well.

Greek Town Is Always Booming

When Osama Bin Laden was killed, the celebration in Greek Town made national news. Any reason to celebrate is blown out of proportion. There are always parties to hit up and the houses are packed. It can be sketchy, but it's never dull.

Facilities

Almost all of the facilities on campus are brand new. The Rec, our most reputable facility, creates a lot of interest to our students. Still ranked number one recreational facility in the nation. Our student centers and libraries are also very new. If you want to have some lunch at Brady Commons or read up on some assignments at Ellis you will find accommodations for all your needs.

Nightlife

Nightlife at Mizzou is really nice, there are several 18 and older clubs and many bars. I would have to say that my favorite are the house parties that are off campus. Frat parties are not very accepting thought. Frats don't like to invite guys into their parties, just girls. If they allow guys they will as for at least a 5:1 girl to guy ratio, your own alcohol, and 10 dollars. This is the most extreme situation, but if you know people in the frat then your chances of getting in are higher. Now going back to off campus parties, the only difficult situation is getting to the party, but getting back is very easy. "Stripes" our on campus organization gives people a free sober driver to wherever in Columbia they would like to go to. The wait is normally long but very nice to get a ride home.

I receive a fair amount of financial aid. The university has made it easy for me to go to school now and not have to worry about the cost until later.

New Student Center!

MU just built a ridiculously expensive three level student center with many (non-chain) eateries, ticket office, bank, computer labs, student lounge and quiet study area. It is so nice, and extremely well kept, never any messes lying around (unlike Memorial Union). The quiet study area in the basement has the biggest and most comfy leather chairs, to study or nap in during the day

Mizzou Dining Halls

The University of Missouri has endless options for student dining. Meal plans are available in 21, 17, 14, 10, and 7 meals per week. 1 meal gets you access to one of the 5 dining halls in which you can eat all you want. All of the dining halls have a grill, a salad bar, a deli, a cereal/breakfast bar, and a made to order station. If you don't use all of your meals for the week, you can go to one of the 2 dining hall emporiums and get essentials for your room (milk, bread, cereal, chips, etc) with your remaining meals. If you don't want to eat at a dining hall, you can go to the 24 hr. Subway at Mizzou Market, or even to the McDonald's located right on campus. There is also Baja Grill, a mexican restaurant, that takes meal plan meals. The new student center just opened up with sushi, italian, coffee, sandwich, and american food restaurants - all of which can be charged with your student EZ Charge. The options are endless!

Big School, Small School

If you've always wanted to go to a big state school, with all the bells and whistles, Mizzou is definitely the place. If you're worried about drowning in all the people and just becoming a number, don't worry. The best thing about Mizzou is that it's big, but it's not so big that you get lost. There are tons of ways and clubs and just people to meet that make your experience unique and the faculty is willing to help if you're willing to work.

Ooh La La

So basically the girls at mizzou, most of them wear nike shorts, mizzou t-shirts and sneakers to class but at night they clean up nice. I would say most girls here are attractive, but in your typical big school way. It seems like everyone on campus is greek which isn't necessarily a bad thing, greek life is big on campus. The guys are HOT! like seriously there's someone for everyone.

Great School All Around!

University of Missouri is well known for its School of Journalism--but it also has other notable courses of study. College of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition is quite unique and well developed. Environmental science and environmental studies is a growing focus at MU. College of Arts and Science offers a great personal, supportive atmosphere. I've had some wonderful professors who have really gone out of their way for students in effort to improve the quality of their academic and research experience at MU.

School spirit is HUGE here. Football games in the fall and basketball games in the spring rule students' schedules and social lives. Professors do the M-I-Z, Z-O-U cheers prior to class. MASSIVE new student recreation center is award winning. SPORTS ARE A BIG DEAL at MU--a VERY big deal.
