Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Public transportation is prominent in Columbia. Buses run throughout the city, and cabs are readily available. Cabs are used on the weekends by students who need a designated driver from parties or bars. The cab fare is not that expensive, especially when shared between multiple people. STRIPES (Supporting Tigers Riding in Pursuit of Ensuring Safety), a safe-ride service, is also used by MU students frequently.

Commuter students park in lots on the outskirts of campus and take a shuttle to the bookstore. The average charge for parking is $120 a year; this includes the bus fees, so students don't have to pay to ride the bus from the parking lot to campus. Shuttles run about every 10 to 15 minutes; during the winter, they are more frequent because of the temperature. The shuttles are available at some off-campus housing, and fees are included in the rent. Students utilize these shuttles often.

I Think Its Great

I don't live on campus and I am allowed to buy a parking pass, and park in serveral locations once I get to campus. Free buses then come and take us to campus, and they also come to campus around the clock to take us back to the are where our cars are. Its quite convenient so you don't have to walk.

Is a Car Necessary on Campus?

If you live and work on campus like me that would be a big fat no. If you needed to get somewhere off campus you could take a bus or cab or even ask someone with a car to take you. If you wanna go somewhere a little farther than there's a bus station nearby. Or you could take the MO-X, which is this neat little shuttle bus that will either take you to Kansas City or Saint Louis for a pretty reasonable rate.
