Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students are well aware that, to the rest of the world, Nebraska is synonymous with Husker football. Athletics are a typical UNL student’s pride and joy. Even if they’re not on a sports scholarship, many UNL students are active in their own sport, whether through one of the many popular intramural sports offered or through one of the best recreational centers in the nation.

In Nebraska, countless songs have been composed about the “Sea of Red” at Husker games at Memorial Stadium. There are only a few spectacles—the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and the Running of the Bulls. for examples—that are more breathtaking than 100,000 screaming Nebraskans all in scarlet. The school spirit is addictive, and even the most apathetic sports fans can’t help but jump out of their seats and yell, “Go Big Red!”

Awesome

There's not much to say about Husker Athletics! I've never seen a school with so much spirit. Husker football game days are some of the best memories I have from my college experience thus far. My boyfriend is a Husker gymnast and though he's had his grievances, I know he absolutely loves the program. I'm jealous I'm not a varsity athlete because they are so spoiled! Despite my jealousy, I've attended a game/meet for almost every sport.

The recreation center for us non-varsity athletes is incredible with so much for us to choose from. The intramural sports list is diverse and varied--from soccer and sand volleyball to hackey-sack and battleship. The club teams are pretty incredible too!

Huskers

The atmosphere at UNL is exciting. Love Husker game day on Saturday.Students get involved, school spirit is evident. The facilities on campus state of the art.Remodeling the east side of the stadium, new basketball practice facility and the New Haymarket arena being built. The rec center is a fun place to hang out with friends and work out, playing on a variety of teams.

Go Big Red

I'll be honest - one of the reasons I chose UNL is my lifelong love for the Husker football team. I was lucky enough to get season tickets, and seeing that being apart of that full, loud, red stadium made me feel like a part of the community immediately. But we support more than just the football team here. Our volleyball team is always superb, and while it can be extremely difficult to get tickets, that should be less of a problem once they move into the new arena. Even when our men's basketball team isn't very good, a good number of students still show their support. Besides the three sports I just mentioned, students can attend all other athletic activities for free, so it makes it easy for us to show our school spirit.

School Spirit

Husker sports—mainly football—are HUGE. Football Saturdays are when most students and fans get the most pumped. It is almost impossible to not get caught up in excitement of wearing red and screaming at the top of your lungs. Sitting in the student section of a Husker game is an experience that cannot be experienced elsewhere.

Getting Tickets

Upperclassmen get priority when ordering football and volleyball tickets, but they can be hard to impossible to get. However, if you are willing to pay the price, tickets can be found (depending on the game, of course). Otherwise, students can get into other sporting events for free or discounted prices.

Best Place to Take a Walk

East Campus has the most scenery to look at on either campus. There are also plenty of bike trails around Lincoln if you want to get off campus.

Did You Know? Tommy Lee tried out and made the Husker band as part of the drumline. After the game, he headed down to O Street and shared a few drinks with his fellow band members.
