Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Some students at UNL are more cynical about dorm food than others. The largest complaint is not about the quality of the food, but its repetition. When students can’t stomach the idea of the nacho bar again, they venture to the Student Union food court or one of many restaurants downtown.

To put it simply, on-campus dining at UNL is not gourmet, but it is low maintenance. If you offered an off-campus student a free meal at a dining hall, he’d jump at the chance because although it’s not spectacular, at least he wouldn’t have to shop for it, cook it, or clean up afterwards. But, for students who eat dorm food more routinely, some variety sure would sure spice things up.

Decent, but Very Location Dependent

The food service provided by UNL is rather lackluster, I mean the Organic Food Cafeterias make the most delicious foods on campus. There is so many repetitive menus among all of the dining halls. They all serve similar foods on the same day. There is some option for students with certain dietary concerns, however for a lactose intolerant person such as myself, it is hard to find delicious food in the dining halls that is not laden in mounds of cheese or soaked in puddles of cream.

Good Value

The food is not the best but it still solid. Quiet a few options and the best thing is the convince. You never have to make food, clean it up, or go to get groceries. The money you spend on meal plan easily makes up for all the time you would spend on food instead.

Campus Dining

There are several dining halls spread out across the campus which offers a variety and convenience no matter where you are on campus. Obviously, some dining halls are better than other and offer fresher food, but overall there is a pretty good selection at all of them. The only thing i dislike about the dining halls is the limited operating hours. Kids in night classes definitely have trouble getting dinner in time because it seems like all the dining halls close relatively early.

Special Options The Hewitt, or the Training Table, is inside Memorial Stadium and is predominantly for student athletes. However, the average Joe student can also eat breakfast and lunch there. The pluses—healthy food including the best fresh fruit and veggies on campus, skinless chicken, and lean red meat. The minuses—hats/bandannas are prohibited and you’ll sometimes feel a bit out of place.
