Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s not that students don’t want diversity at UNL, it's just that there’s not a whole lot of it to be had in the great state of Nebraska. Many of the minority students at UNL are honors students or student leaders, and they are greeted with the same warm smile that anyone else could expect from a Nebraskan.

Of course, there’s progress to be made at UNL when it comes to diversity, and some may argue that there is nowhere to go but up. Racial stereotypes and slurs certainly don’t run rampant, but they’re not unheard of either. In 1892, George Flippin donned a Nebraska football helmet to become one of only five African-American student-athletes in the nation. It’s this kind of forward thinking that UNL strives for—even in a state that can be a bit backwards, and for this, the school earns some points but not enough for a decent grade.

Since the University of Nebraska - Lincoln is a top research university, international students are a common sight on campus. There is an incredible number of Asian students. Integration with the white students is often difficult because of language barriers and social stigmas. The Asian students tend to keep to themselves while the white students ignore them. I gave the school an B "plus" because of the majority's unwillingness to connect.

Mediocre

Most of the diversity comes from International students, instead of diverse Americans. Religious diversity is almost non-existent. Acceptance of others is common but definitely has room to grow.

Not Very Diverse

There is not much diversity at UNL. Most students come from a middle class white family. There is some diversity but not much and people are really kept separate. There is one residence hall that mostly houses Asian students and there is another that houses mostly white students.
