Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

UNL students don’t seem to have too much trouble having a good time on weekends—or any other night, for that matter. O Street is extremely popular for the 21-and-over crowd, but minors aren’t totally out of luck. Certain clubs are 19-plus on select nights and 20-year-olds can still get a drink (non-alcoholic) at a coffeeshop. Students appreciate O Street’s proximity to campus and the NU-On-Wheels (475-RIDE) Program for those nights that walking home three blocks is out of the question.

Dealing with the pervasive nightlife is a huge perk of living in a college town. There always seems to be enough to do to keep students out of (or sometimes into) trouble. Be warned: The Lincoln Police Department maintains a constant presence downtown. On busy nights, they line their cars in the middle of O Street to keep watch over the crowd. As long as you’re not puking on people or fighting, they’ll usually just look the other way. However, it is never wise to hang out much after midnight downtown, especially if you are female, beause this is when most of the fights and bad things happen.

Weekend Scene

The nightlife in Lincoln is pretty fun but mostly revolves around Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. If you aren't 21 it is mostly house parties, but in order to really have fun and meet a lot of people join a sorority or fraternity. Also, living in the dorms freshmen year is a great way to meet people.

Underage Nightlife

There is not a whole lot of underage nightlife. Most of my friends go downtown on "O st" to the bars. I usually go bowling, to the movies, to dances or social events held by the multicultural Greeks.

Elk Creek Water (a mixture of every liquor on the rail) is about the only reason to go but what a reason it is.

Mickey’s added a cage. And throughout the night the DJ will yell over the mike, “No dudes in the cage!”

Yia Yia’s Pizza, Beer & Wine

Yia Yia’s is more known for it’s pizza than its bar, but that doesn’t stop UNL students from going there on Friday and Saturday nights. And no, the name has nothing to do with the Ya Ya Sisterhood.
