Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

UNLV athletics have room for improvement, as far as the play of the teams goes. However, UNLV sports are improving greatly. Though few know it, the big sports aren’t the only improving athletics at UNLV. Everyone here seems to want there to be more school spirit, but there has been little done in the past few years to encourage or promote full blown-out athletic events like other state schools. It’s not to say there is no knowledge or support for the athletics. In every class, you will probably meet an athlete of varsity or intramural level, and there are more than enough willing to start new club or IM sports. So, if you were an athlete in high school, there is opportunity to keep that up here at UNLV.

Over the last few years, UNLV has hired many elite coaches with Lon Krugar (basketball) and Utah’s former offensive coordinator, Mike Sanford (football) being the two biggest. With the attendance not as high as UNLV would hope at most of their sporting events, Hamrick even hired new marketing people to help move this along. As soon as students start attending the UNLV games, sports will be improved tremendously around campus.

Most Popular Sports

The most popular sports at UNLV are basketball and football. The football team is not the greatest but is showing signs of improvement. Basketball has been the school’s most popular sport since its championship run in 1990 and has continued to stay strong, winning the Mountain West Conference in 2008.

Most Overlooked Teams

Year-in and year-out, UNLV produces a golf team that competes for national titles. The men’s swimming and diving team has championed the Mountain West Conference for more than three years, and the tennis and baseball teams perform well, but not enough people know it.

School Spirit

The nickname Rebels was given to UNLV athletic teams because the school rebelled against the older UNR. Hey Reb, known for his long white mustache and wide-brimmed cowboy hat, became the school’s official mascot in the early 1980s.

UNLV’s first mascot was Beauregard the cartoon wolf, dressed in a gray military field jacket and Confederate cap. As UNLV pointedly rebelled against the older UNR, the Confederate Beau became the school’s mascot as a jab at UNR’s northern looking wolf pack mascot. Beau was replaced when a group of black athletes complained of having a mascot that represented the wrong side of the Civil War. Though Beauregard was replaced in the early 1970s, his memory lives on in the original basketball court floor, which is now the Barrick Museum floor.

Getting Tickets

Students have access to all Rebel games for free and can pick up tickets before or at the game with student ID. You will have to sit in the student-only area, but it’s the best spot to be—the students paint their faces and sing the fight song.
