College Prowler Take

UNLV athletics have room for improvement, as far as the play of the teams goes. However, UNLV sports are improving greatly. Though few know it, the big sports aren’t the only improving athletics at UNLV. Everyone here seems to want there to be more school spirit, but there has been little done in the past few years to encourage or promote full blown-out athletic events like other state schools. It’s not to say there is no knowledge or support for the athletics. In every class, you will probably meet an athlete of varsity or intramural level, and there are more than enough willing to start new club or IM sports. So, if you were an athlete in high school, there is opportunity to keep that up here at UNLV.

Over the last few years, UNLV has hired many elite coaches with Lon Krugar (basketball) and Utah’s former offensive coordinator, Mike Sanford (football) being the two biggest. With the attendance not as high as UNLV would hope at most of their sporting events, Hamrick even hired new marketing people to help move this along. As soon as students start attending the UNLV games, sports will be improved tremendously around campus.

Basketball is a pretty big deal. Hopefully, football will come around. Intramural sports rock!

Football is big, despite the team never performing to expectations, although the game against UNLV’s rival, the University of Nevada, Reno, is an event.

The varsity sports that seem to be big are basketball and football. Besides those, I don’t really hear much of other sports. Intramural sports are semi-known but not very popular.

Since I work for UNLV Tickets, I can tell you that many students are pretty big on sports. You basically see the same people attend the games and show a lot of school spirit.

Gyms and Facilities

  • Cox Pavillion - A contribution from Cox Communications enabled UNLV to build a third facility to provide corporate, convention, and meeting planners a new alternative in Las Vegas. This 3,000-seat venue houses UNLV’s volleyball and women’s basketball programs, and it also features a practice facility for the men’s basketball program. The Cox Pavilion is also used for academic functions, concerts, keynote addresses, trade shows, and parties.
  • Paul McDermott Complex - McDermott is the only recreation facility available currently until the new student recreation center opens in 2007. The gym has a weight room, cardio room, Olympic-sized pool, open gymnasium, racquetball courts, and one padded room that is used for martial arts training. It’s an outdated facility that has very little room if you go during the peak hours. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you want to look at it, not too many students use the facility because a regular gym membership at the local Gold’s Gym or Las Vegas Athletic Club costs so little that it isn’t worth wasting time for.
  • Sam Boyd Stadium - Sam Boyd Stadium is home to the UNLV Rebel football team, the Las Vegas Bowl, the annual AMA Supercross Series Finals, the annual Monster Jam World Finals, and concerts from acts like Ozzy Osbourne and U2.
  • Student Recreation Center - The Student Recreation and Wellness Center, or the RWC, is no ordinary campus recreation center—it boasts a full-size Olympic pool, indoor running track, the latest in weight and fitness equipment, basketball, volleyball, and racquetball courts, a social lounge, juice bar, massage room, and the list goes on. Students can take a variety of workout classes and enjoy a host of other amenities that are all available in a building that will make your friends at other campuses jealous.
  • Thomas & Mack Center - Home of the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels and the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena Football League, the Thomas & Mack Center was named for two prominent Las Vegas bankers, E. Parry Thomas and Jerome Mack, who established the original land foundation. The Center hosts concerts and brings a variety of other sporting events to Las Vegas.

Getting Tickets

Students have access to all Rebel games for free and can pick up tickets before or at the game with student ID. You will have to sit in the student-only area, but it’s the best spot to be—the students paint their faces and sing the fight song.

Most Popular Sports

The most popular sports at UNLV are basketball and football. The football team is not the greatest but is showing signs of improvement. Basketball has been the school’s most popular sport since its championship run in 1990 and has continued to stay strong, winning the Mountain West Conference in 2008.

Most Overlooked Teams

Year-in and year-out, UNLV produces a golf team that competes for national titles. The men’s swimming and diving team has championed the Mountain West Conference for more than three years, and the tennis and baseball teams perform well, but not enough people know it.
