College Prowler Take

UNLV is a fairly new school compared to other more established universities, and it shows. A few of UNLV’s buildings look like they were built when the school was founded in 1957, but rather than adding character, they look worse for wear. Grant Hall, which was built in 1959, is especially pathetic. The good news is that a lot of money has been put into renewal efforts. School officials are slowly updating amenities such as furniture and technology, to freshen up the campus. The new student union, Recreation and Wellness Center, and updated Lied Library are all hits with the students. UNLV’s master plan has a list of future renovation projects and additions, which includes five much-anticipated parking garages already in construction.

UNLV’s main campus is landlocked. It makes the administration more efficient in its planning, but it also means there cannot be any drastic increases in campus size. The dental school is located away from campus, and UNLV officials are planning to expand the main campus to the north side of the Las Vegas Valley, but by the time that’s built, you’ll have long since graduated.

The facilities at UNLV are getting...

The facilities at UNLV are getting better each year. Just recently, the wellness and rec center building opened up. There is an indoor track, indoor swimming pool, free instruction classes, and a walk-in pharmacy with diet and nutrition experts on hand to give you an evaluation. Also, the student union was newly renovated last year, and it's become a popular hangout for all students.

I think the new Student Recreation and Wellness Center is one of the best in the country. It has four levels and a cardio room, racquetball courts, indoor basketball/soccer/volleyball courts, Olympic-sized lap pool, jacuzzi, leisure pool, locker rooms, weight room, great basketball courts, and an indoor track with a great view of the strip. There's also a variety of classes available, such as indoor cycling, yoga, and kick boxing. What’s even better is this facility is free for students who are enrolled full time. It’s also convenient to go before, in-between, or after classes because of its long hours during the week.

New buildings replacing old ones are popping up almost every year. The student union, Student Recreation and Wellness Center, and the Urban Affairs College are just a few. All of these buildings are very modern and fit the fast-growing metropolitan city of Las Vegas.

Favorite Things To Do

As a rule, most students don’t hang out on campus. Those who do go to the MSU where students like to play pool, table tennis, and arcade games, hang out on the numerous couches and at Starbucks, or attend a lecture in the theatre. Students also like to work out or enjoy a smoothie at the Recreation and Wellness Center. Also, there's an event every month at the SU called Rebels After Dark. Bands and comedians are invited to perform, and students come to watch, play videogames together, make crafts, eat, and socialize.

Escape the heat inside the MSU, watch sporting events, go to concerts and other events in the Thomas & Mack Center, write for UNLV’s newspaper (The Rebel Yell) or other UNLV publications, submit literature or artwork to UNLV’s creative magazine (Vagus Nerve), play tennis, work out in the gym, swim, join a team, play games in the game room, watch lecturers brought to campus by the Barbara Greenspun Lecture Series and the Barrick Lecture Series, or go to see perfomers at the Charles Vanda Master Series.
