Quick Stats

School Slang
  • FDH: The Flora Dungan Humanities building
  • Free Speech Zone: A designated area on campus where people can make speeches, saying whatever they want, even if they are not UNLV students
  • MSU: The Moyer Student Union
  • UNLV Alphabet: Learn the UNLV alphabet. Like FDH and MSU, there’s an abbreviation for every building.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Bills are not sent out during summer school, which makes it very easy to end up with a late fee.
  • Carry pepper spray, and never walk alone at night.
  • If you leave your drink unattended at a party, bar, or club, throw it away.
  • Scholarships are distributed only shortly before late-fee time, so don’t freak out if they haven’t been distributed even two weeks before the semester begins. Do double check that they are distributed before late fees are imposed, however, because getting undeserved late fees removed is annoying.
  • Some clubs sell supplies cheaper than nearby bookstores. For example, the Chemistry Club sells goggles and lab coats.
Tips to Succeed
  • Apply for scholarships. Some of the scholarships offered in a certain major are barely advertised, and thus not applied for. You can sometimes get these just by applying, as you might be the only applicant.
  • Before you take eight one-credit athletic classes, make sure your major allows it. In some majors, you can only get four athletic credits toward your major. The rest will be wasted.
  • Don’t procrastinate.
  • Double check your graduation packet to make sure all classes have been applied to the correct category. If you took anything out of the ordinary, there will probably be misplaced classes in your graduation packet.
  • File for graduation one year prior to your expected graduation date.
  • If a class is full, try daily to get into it; someone might have dropped it.
  • If you aren’t sure what you want to major in, take general courses first. Many people start with required classes for what they might major in and then change their minds after the first year and have to start all over again. If you are wishy washy about your major, take general courses and just one of the major’s required classes to see how you like the subject. If you decide the major’s not for you, the one class you took can be filed under electives, and you won’t be a year or a semester behind.
  • Leave your house early to find a parking spot. It always takes longer than you expect to find an opening.
  • Look in the catalog to see what classes cover more than one requirement. For example, an English class might cover English and multicultural requirements. You still need to take the same amount of overall credits, but more of them can be fun classes.
  • Look up your professors at www.ratemyprofessor.com.
  • Make your experience a valuable one by getting to know people by networking, finding study buddies, and making life-long friends.
  • Make yourself known to all your teachers. Participate in class or stay after class to ask a question or introduce yourself. Act interested in the subject; many people aren’t interested in what the teacher is saying, and he/she will be enthused if someone actually looks like they care. Come grading time, if you are borderline between an A and a B, the teacher will remember you and how much you participated and might lean toward the better grade. Also, if the instructor hears of an internship or job opportunity of some kind, they will likely tell you about it first.
  • Meet with your counselor every semester, or at least every year, to make sure you are on the right track. Make the appointment early, because counselors usually have a month-long waiting list.
  • Sign up for your classes the day registration is open to you. Many people sign up for classes right before school starts, and all the classes they want are full.
  • Start taking the required classes for your major your sophomore year, and try to be almost done with them your junior year. Many people complain that it took five years to graduate because when they signed up for their remaining six (or so) required classes their senior year, the classes were already full. If you are almost done with all of them by the beginning of your senior year, you will graduate on time, as long as you took the correct number of credits every semester.

UNLV Campus Life

There are always things going on outside of the Student Union to participate in. We have movie nights, lots of crafts; card making, frame decorating. We celebrate Halloween and decorate pumpkins...they provide lots of activities to get involved in. We also have a lot of guest speakers, and even step shows!

Unique Unlv

i wouldnt really know what makes my school SO different from other schools? since this is the only school ive been to . I will say that i love my school for what it is, and i love the social scene most of all because at the end of the day even though this is college, the majority of people here are young and the campus really does make the best of it.

Facts

Traditions
  • The Fremont Cannon: A trophy won by the winner of the UNLV vs. UNR (University of Nevada, Reno) annual football game. The tradition, which began three decades ago, has become a battle for Nevada. Being Nevada’s only two universities, UNLV and UNR are long-time rivals. The UNLV–UNR football game is a major event.
  • Premier UNLV: Premier UNLV is designed to welcome new and returning students to campus. Free food and fight song T-shirts are given out while live music plays in the background. After athletic teams are introduced and a welcome back address is given, students form the letters UNLV and shine flashlights to create the annual premier UNLV photograph.
  • The Rebel Connection: The Rebel Connection Weeks of Welcome (WOW) is UNLV’s welcome program designed to help new and current students, families, and staff ease into the new academic year. WOW includes orientation and signature events centered around campus life, resources, and campus traditions.
  • The Rebel Experience: This is UNLV’s official tailgate party, which premiered in 1997 with 30,000 fans. The UNLV marching band and cheerleaders, along with other special groups perform, making the Rebel Experience a memorable one.
  • UnityFest: UnityFest is a week of events celebrating diversity. Entertainers, programs, and cultural experiences help to increase cultural awareness of students, faculty, and staff.
  • UNLV Homecoming: Homecoming welcomes UNLV alumni back home by bringing alumni, students, faculty, staff, and supporters together to celebrate traditions, pride, friendships, and experiences of UNLV life.
Urban Legends
  • It is also rumored around the country (apparently) that Las Vegans live in hotels. This is just a rumor.
  • It is suspected that the grounds workers dye the grass green to satisfy Nevada college requirements. Hey, it saves water.
  • Some former Tonopah residents swear there is a Tonopah ghost, which they nicknamed Tony.
  • Some people believe that you can periodically see UFOs flying in the Luxor beam.
  • The 74,000-pound upside-down flashlight erected by Claes Oldenburg in 1981 is rumored to have originally been upright, but having a beam so powerful, it distracted planes and had to be flipped over. That had to have been a powerful light to cause more of a ruckus than the bright blue beam of the Luxor Hotel, which is close to McCarran Airport.
