Not Much to Choose from

The school is not in the best area of town. There is a high level of crime in the area. The off-campus options are about the same as the on-campus options: standard fast food. If you're up for a good walk, there is an excellent Mediterranean restaurant nearby (Paymon's) and a little further up the road is the Boulevard Mall... also mostly fast food. Anything NOT fast food will probably require a bus or cab ride if the student doesn't have his own means of transportation. It is a low-income area.

Distance Ed by Choice

Being an older student working towards double-bachelor, I don't really want to go to the campus unless absolutely necessary because I feel like I stand out like a sore thumb. Saving the school from a lower grade, there are a lot of sporting events. I don't go to them. I am aware of a few cultural activities. I used to go to the ballet there every December, but I believe that has since moved. The area around the school is high in crime (look it up on the Internet - I was a cop here. I don't think it's fair for distance ed students to have to pay more than regular students when distance ed means no classrooms or supplies, and some online professors use videos and syllabus from YEARS back. There is a shopping mall about a mile from campus, but it has a lot of gang problems. A lot of the housing in the are is low income. Locals do offer students discounts sometimes.. i.e. movies, etc. As for area attractions... this is Vegas! What more do I need to say?

UNLV Offers Tons of Selection

Student Union is where you can satisfy your hunger. From Starbucks to Panda Express, everyone could easily find their favorite joints. There are food places all around the Campus if your next class isn't close to the Student Union. UNLV also welcomes private vendors, so it's impossible to go outside the campus just to try out something new.

An Education in Diversity

While at UNLV, I have been exposed to a very socioeconomically diverse group of people. It has help me come to appreciate people from vastly different backgounds than mine. People are open and accepting of others. I highly recommend attending UNLV. The academics and the diverse cultural environment are very educational and equally important to the learning experience.

The Scenery!

The scenery of the campus is fun! All the lounges to hang out are colorful, which is fun. It gives you the stress free feel. There are quiet areas when you need it. It has many different locations to actually do your homework at. Another thing is that, it has a couple great museums to visit.

Drugs Are Not an Issue at All

the campus is a dry campus, and drug use is not tolerated. This a huge commuter school and with all the various venues around, drug use and drinking is probably done at house parties and other places not on campus.

Campus Safety

There are many strict rules set into play here at UNLV. I find it to be a very safe environment because of such rules. First of all, we have our OWN police department, strictly for the university. They are accessible 24/7 and have numerous emergency callings set up throughout the campus. For the students on campus, there are struct rules on underage drinking and smoking. Automatic eviction takes place if any of these occur, and this causes a safer community for us students.

There are numerous special study options offered at UNLV. Every student is assigned one of many academic advisors, and there are more than enough programs that aid in the studying process. The Writing Center is dedicated in helping students in improving their writing skills, which are skills needed in everyday life. Also, tutoring is available EVERYWHERE and cover up all major courses. If a student is having a problem with managing time for studying, The Academic Advisement Center is always available to assist with such issues. If the student has personal problems that may affect his studying, his Academic Advisor is always available to help with one-on-one communication. Diversity

looking out at the school, there is a lot of diversity among the students on campus. No one person is the same and with the same interests, as a result, there are various clubs, groups, and/or organizations for everyone. Everyone is accepting and their is no judgment among the students. Beliefs, religion, economic background and sexual orientation are not factors that are taken into account by students. People are not judged and the students do not treat anyone based on who they are or what they like.

It's Vegas Baby!

There has not been much talk about how strict any rules have been affecting anyone. UNLV is a very much easy going school and as long as the student knows the difference between right and wrong there should not be an issue. The students are now considered adults so anything that is an issue with the law, there can be some consequences with being arrested but if people make dumb choices, what else do you expect.

Free Escorts to Accommodate Uneasiness

UNLV is known to be about a five minute drive away from the strip and there may be at times a warning on campus to keep away from a certain building at night but there are always free services to keep the student safe. There are free escorts that will walk any person to their car or where ever they may need to go. There are emergency phones on campus with an automatic GPS location of where the student is calling from in case they may be at need.

Financial Aid = HELL

Getting a hold of anyone at financial aid even to ask a few simple questions is a very long and frustrating process. For example, I called the financial aid office this morning to ask a few questions about tuition this semester and I was hung up on 3 times then waited on hold for about 40 minutes before being disconnected a fourth time. When you do actually reach a living human being they do not always provide you with accurate information nor do they care about your situation. No one at the financial aid department has ever gone out of their way to help me as a student or act like they care in the slightest.

The student union is fairly good. The prices are fair and the food is fairly good. Not alot of options for me, because I'm gluten intolerant, although they are introducing a new place soon. The student health and wellness centers are great, as well as the gym, which is fully equipped and very convenient.
