Drinking Nor Smoking Is Allowed

At UNLV there are non smoking areas all over campus. Drinking is what people usually do but some students prefer smoking.

Campus Safety

There are many strict rules set into play here at UNLV. I find it to be a very safe environment because of such rules. First of all, we have our OWN police department, strictly for the university. They are accessible 24/7 and have numerous emergency callings set up throughout the campus. For the students on campus, there are struct rules on underage drinking and smoking. Automatic eviction takes place if any of these occur, and this causes a safer community for us students.

Special Study Options

There are numerous special study options offered at UNLV. Every student is assigned one of many academic advisors, and there are more than enough programs that aid in the studying process. The Writing Center is dedicated in helping students in improving their writing skills, which are skills needed in everyday life. Also, tutoring is available EVERYWHERE and cover up all major courses. If a student is having a problem with managing time for studying, The Academic Advisement Center is always available to assist with such issues. If the student has personal problems that may affect his studying, his Academic Advisor is always available to help with one-on-one communication. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas has top-of-the-line study programs, and they are all highly effective.

Diversity

looking out at the school, there is a lot of diversity among the students on campus. No one person is the same and with the same interests, as a result, there are various clubs, groups, and/or organizations for everyone. Everyone is accepting and their is no judgment among the students. Beliefs, religion, economic background and sexual orientation are not factors that are taken into account by students. People are not judged and the students do not treat anyone based on who they are or what they like.

Fast City of Las Vegas

For students without cars, walking is a great option! Also, with the layout of the city, the bus line goes just about anywhere you need to go.

It's Vegas Baby!

There has not been much talk about how strict any rules have been affecting anyone. UNLV is a very much easy going school and as long as the student knows the difference between right and wrong there should not be an issue. The students are now considered adults so anything that is an issue with the law, there can be some consequences with being arrested but if people make dumb choices, what else do you expect.

Free Escorts to Accommodate Uneasiness

UNLV is known to be about a five minute drive away from the strip and there may be at times a warning on campus to keep away from a certain building at night but there are always free services to keep the student safe. There are free escorts that will walk any person to their car or where ever they may need to go. There are emergency phones on campus with an automatic GPS location of where the student is calling from in case they may be at need.

Financial Aid = HELL

Getting a hold of anyone at financial aid even to ask a few simple questions is a very long and frustrating process. For example, I called the financial aid office this morning to ask a few questions about tuition this semester and I was hung up on 3 times then waited on hold for about 40 minutes before being disconnected a fourth time. When you do actually reach a living human being they do not always provide you with accurate information nor do they care about your situation. No one at the financial aid department has ever gone out of their way to help me as a student or act like they care in the slightest.

The student union is fairly good. The prices are fair and the food is fairly good. Not alot of options for me, because I'm gluten intolerant, although they are introducing a new place soon. The student health and wellness centers are great, as well as the gym, which is fully equipped and very convenient.

Tuition Too Overpriced for Lack of Service

UNLV offers offers a wide range of curriculum. However, the professors tend to be a bit arrogant, not paying much attention to the student's needs and talking about their success in the field making it harder to learn in some classes due to their lack of help. The registration process, cashier services and financial aid reps. aren't much of a help either. You have to walk yourself through most things.

Very Healthy and Very Safe

Safety is very important to UNLV. There are police emergency buttons posted on all of the paths across campus. Health is also very important, there is a free clinic that is on campus, where I go often with health concerns. The recreation center at UNLV is also spectacular with many classes and incredible hours to offer complete health.

Lose the Label

Las Vegas may seem like a sinful city according to the movies but in reality, it's as down to earth as an orange farmer. Just because The University of Las Vegas itself is just down the road from the Strip, it really has no impact on the learning environment at all. It's not a party school as what people make it out to be. Besides from all the fun stuff located on the Strip, there's also many other tourist (or non-tourist) attractions such as the never ending list of movie theaters open 24/7 or the biggest Forever 21 yet to be recorded in history.

There's a vegan donut-shop across the street called Al's Donuts if you're craving a sweet treat. It's delicious.

I am embarrassed by m school. Mostly because everyone cheats their way through and are overall incompetent. I feel like my degree is not worth much and doesn't mean anything. I am ashamed of my slothful, cheating peers.

Nice

I know coming into Las Vegas a lot of people assume it is going to be blazing hot, but honestly the time when school is in session we have more cold days than hot days. Only the middle of summer is intensely hot, so we have some nice weather for the first few weeks of fall and then it's blistering cold until the few nice weeks of weather at the end of spring.

Greek Life at University of Nevada - Las Vegas

Greek Life Is Not So Great at UNLV

Greek Life really seems to dominate the campus at UNLV and there is constant pressure to join. Most, not all, of Greek Life are lazy and barely go to class. They only seem to socialize with other Greeks and take up all the tables in the student union. Most of them act very stuck up. There are a handful who actually display the qualities a Greek should display and have gone on to do great things and the experience has been a good thing for them. But for the most part, I can't stand being around any Greeks and I hate walking past them. And they really hate when non-Greeks attend their parties. They wear their letters all the time to separate themselves from the rest and treat it like a caste system and if you even attempt to talk to them and you're not Greek, good luck. They'll look at you like you have 3 heads.

Overall Experience at University of Nevada - Las Vegas

A Little Underwhelming..

If you are looking for a school that will give you a degree, UNLV is the place. However, if you are looking for a place that will open your eyes and make you excited about your education, this is not the place. The majority of the undergraduate students are in-state kids who never really got excited about school but knew that their parents wanted them to go to college and get a degree. It's a commuter campus so making friends is difficult. Most people drive to school, go to class, then go directly home. One plus is definitely the cost. It is extremely affordable, especially for those with a Millennium Scholarship, and in hard economic times you can definitely get a degree for a bargain here. It just isn't the complete university experience.

Mostly Students from the Las Vegas Valley

Racially UNLV is very diverse, but as most students are from Las Vegas high schools the school tends to lack diversity in upbringing.
