College Prowler Take
For the most part, the UNLV campus is surprisingly safe. The neighborhoods around UNLV are not the best, but few major crimes occur on the campus, though there have been some. Those committing the crimes are usually non-students. Car break-ins occur regularly, particularly when a concert is held at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV police officers and security patrol the campus, even at night. Some will go so far as to check out open doors in buildings late at night. Call-boxes connecting to UNLV police are scattered throughout the campus to assist those in need, but their effectiveness has been questioned. Large shuttles are available to drive students to the general area of their cars also. Regardless of the campus’ general safety, do not walk alone at night, as UNLV is still in the center of Las Vegas, which is a transient town that does not always attract the highest-quality people. Safety while going out at night calls for extra caution. Use common sense, and always walk in groups with at least one guy present if possible. The UNLV police do everything they can to keep the campus safe, yet it is up to the students to take it from there while out in the city.

Due to our surrounding area, there is crime, but if students stay in groups and know their surroundings, they will be fine.

UNLV does have a good security system. There are always cops patrolling the area and going through parking lots making sure our cars are safe. We even have cops on horses to help with traffic when students need to cross the street. Overall, I feel safe on campus.

Security is being beefed up, but if you have a bike, I would suggest having a hard-core lock system, like maybe two or three. Bikes are commonly stolen. Also, the school is in a high-crime area, so don't walk alone. Ladies, I suggest pepper spray as a good item to have with you at all times. The school itself is generally very safe, but the areas surrounding the school are not good.

During the day, I feel safe around campus—no problems whatsoever. However, at night, it would be more comforting to see a security guard patrolling campus, or even some better lighting near the walkways. As a young woman, I do avoid the campus at night because I think it is unsafe. |

There is supposed to be a shuttle, but I don’t see it very often. Other than that, there are just a few car thefts and burglaries. |
