College Prowler Take
The traffic in Vegas can be a big drawback. Things are almost always slow on Las Vegas Boulevard. Around campus and the freeways, peak driving hours are a nightmare. However, most locals know the back streets of the Strip, and you can learn them quickly, too. The bumper-to-bumper traffic in the afternoon shouldn’t deter you either. Construction on freeways can make the traffic a little hairy, but taking side streets cuts travel time. Once the road clears up in a few hours, having a car means you have the whole city at your disposal. The public transportation system is definitely lacking. Though it cuts down on emissions, the price to pay is its unreliability and somewhat sketchy passengers. Taking the bus isn’t a bad experience if you’re not on a time restraint, but if you have an appointment, it would be better to find a ride. The buses are notoriously late for pick-ups and drop-offs. Also, the surrounding area of UNLV isn’t the safest. Anyone travelling alone should carry pepper spray—especially at night. An alternative some students take is calling a cab or limo service to cart them around at night to avoid the possibility of getting a DUI or driving around when other people are under the influence. UNLV also offers incentives to students who carpool to school together through Club Ride.

It’s not Boston, New York, or London, but I guess it’s alright. Personally, I would never set foot on a CAT bus, but if you must and you’re female, maybe carry Mace. |

Buses and taxis are all the city offers, as far as I know. I have never ridden in either, but the buses don’t exactly have the best rep, and cabs are expensive, so I guess having a car is key. |
