Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The traffic in Vegas can be a big drawback. Things are almost always slow on Las Vegas Boulevard. Around campus and the freeways, peak driving hours are a nightmare. However, most locals know the back streets of the Strip, and you can learn them quickly, too. The bumper-to-bumper traffic in the afternoon shouldn’t deter you either. Construction on freeways can make the traffic a little hairy, but taking side streets cuts travel time. Once the road clears up in a few hours, having a car means you have the whole city at your disposal.

The public transportation system is definitely lacking. Though it cuts down on emissions, the price to pay is its unreliability and somewhat sketchy passengers. Taking the bus isn’t a bad experience if you’re not on a time restraint, but if you have an appointment, it would be better to find a ride. The buses are notoriously late for pick-ups and drop-offs. Also, the surrounding area of UNLV isn’t the safest. Anyone travelling alone should carry pepper spray—especially at night. An alternative some students take is calling a cab or limo service to cart them around at night to avoid the possibility of getting a DUI or driving around when other people are under the influence. UNLV also offers incentives to students who carpool to school together through Club Ride.

Too Hot to Walk or Bike

Of course it being the desert out here. The key source of transportation is to own a car. During the summer it can be a health risk to walk or bike to and from campus, but if you're just strolling through campus it might not be as bad. As long as you don't stay in the harsh weather conditions too long.

It's Pretty Far from My House

but its okay. The fact that its a small campus so its not hard to get from one class to the other. Food and books are pricey but better than most colleges.

Transport

The busses around the university are not the most user-friendly, and the parking, for those students who choose to use their own cars, is ridiculous. There needs to be more parking. When it takes an hour to find a parking spot at noon, there is a problem.
