Food is a lot better than other campuses, and they actually have vegan options, but they still need some work. People love to get dollar-slice pizza downtown, and Pauly’s makes awesome falafel.

The dorm you choose depends on what you want out of school. If you want to be able to walk out your door and onto frat row, you should stay in the biggest dorm, Stoke. Williamson and Christiansen are far away from the parties but close to the school. The Gables is in the middle of nowhere, but there are no RAs either, so you can have parties and stuff without anyone watching you.

Compared to most schools (so I’ve heard), our dining halls are pretty good. We have unlimited meal plans and a wide variety of foods at the dining hall. In addition to whatever the main course is for the night, we always have pizza, stir fry, salad bars, sandwich bars, soups, grilled food, and many other things to choose from. I eat a lot better at school than at home. Besides the three dining halls, we have a couple of café-like places where you can buy food to take out with you. It’s convenient for people who are always going to and from classes.

In my experience, there are two types of parties on campus. The first is the big frat party, which seems to be the scene for a lot of freshman girls. That’s cool—if you like getting hit on by sketchy guys and leaving with vomit all over your pants. The second type of party on campus is the small apartment party. We have two on-campus apartment complexes that host parties quite often, and they are good for a more intimate party if you want to meet people and get to know them. Regardless, this is UNH, there’s always something fun going on.

There aren’t really any clubs in town. There are a few bars, such as Libby’s and the Tin Palace.

I’m not aware of any over-usage of any drug on campus, other than marijuana. I know of a lot of people that smoke. Alcohol is definitely the number one substance used on campus.

They have buses that go around campus and stop at the main buildings, and they also have buses that go to the malls and Portsmouth. If you are really drunk, you can call SAFE rides, and they will pick you up and drop you off. There is also a train that goes to Boston, which stops at the school.

There is a heck of a lot of weed. There are other drugs, but unless you do them, you rarely see them. Everything is behind closed doors. There a lot kids that use Ritalin and Adderall to stay awake.

It is easy to park on campus, but you must have a permit. As a freshman, they say no one is allowed to have a permit. My freshman friends found places to park, but at a high cost. Some of my friends parked at a church for $200 a semester!

Parking is UNH’s biggest problem. There are plenty of spaces, but they are so far away! If you are planning on living off campus and commuting, which I don’t suggest doing as a freshman—parking lots are always fun! You have to get there almost a half an hour before class to take the shuttle to campus. During my junior and senior years, I lived in Dover, which meant I had to drive to campus and find a parking spot every day. It really wasn’t that bad—I had morning classes and if you get there early, there are plenty of spots. Come midday, you’re fighting for spots. Parking isn’t really a problem, but convenience of parking is. The school is so good, though, we all just deal with it and complain to feel better!

I am very pleased with my decision to attend this school. The campus is just so pretty, calm, and laid-back, and everything is at your disposal. UNH really gives students a chance to shape their own experiences. Classes, parties, friends, drugs, sororities—they are all there for you to mold into whatever you want. Nothing is forced in your face; it all just floats around your head like puzzle pieces, and it is your job to put that puzzle together.

I was accepted to all the schools I applied to, but I chose UNH because it was the one I could afford. To be honest, it wasn’t my first choice. Let me tell you, though, that I had a great time while I was there. The school is wonderful, and I had a good time.

Transportation Options Are Great

A+

UNH has an extremely walkable campus, I am currently a junior and have not felt the need to have a car on campus yet. There are plenty of buses that run at all hours of the night so those who don't live right on campus have ways to get back to their dorms/apartments. Their are also buses that take you outside of Durham, so you can easily access the mall/wal-mart/ any other place you would need to go

Good Student Involvement

B+

The opportunities for students at UNH are endless in terms of ticket availability. All events are free for students; however, the emphasis put on athletics is very strong but athletes only represent a very small percentage of students going to UNH.
