The Caf—as the main dining hall on campus has come to be known—is definitely not a favorite among students, but it isn’t for lack of trying. Everything from hot breakfasts and cereals to burgers and fries to pizza and pasta to sandwiches and salads is available, but the quality of taste is about equal to what you could find in your high school’s cafeteria. Not to mention, the bulk of the food available isn’t exactly healthy. That’s not a good thing when the Caf is your main source of food—and it will be when you’re a freshman. The good news is that every meal plan comes with a “declining balance”—a portion of money that is included in the price of your meal plan that you can spend freely at the campus food court, coffee shops, convenience stores, and restaurants. The only bummer about declining balance is that it is a small amount of money during your freshman year—usually only around $75 to $150. When you move up in class ranking, you can choose a meal plan based on how much declining balance you want. This is why you generally only see underclassmen eating in the Caf.
The food court is a hot spot for students with declining balances to burn, and there is definitely a lot to choose from. You can enjoy food from several different familiar restaurants. Fair warning, though: it can be difficult to find somewhere to sit during the lunch hour (usually 11:45 a.m. until about 1 or 1:30 p.m.).
