Guys & Girls:
The guys and girls at UNCW are exactly what you would expect from a southern university for mostly upper-middle class white students. The guys are fairly attractive, although many of them tend to wear pastel pants or odd flip flops. Nearly all the girls are attractive, but there are a lot of blondes. Overall people are nice, but if you don't fit into the model they expect, you will probably get the cold shoulder.

Wilmington is a total foody town and there are SO many options. That is one of the best parts about living in wilmington is all of the restaurant options. There are so many awesome locations as well, from historic downtown wilmington, wrightsville beach, mayfaire shopping center area, or even right near the school. The cost and convenience varies but most places are pretty reasonable. One diamond in the rough we found while we lived in wilmington is called Indochine, they have amazing pad thai all the ingredients are fresh and the portion size is realistic for what you pay. There are so many great places to eat in wilmington I could go on and on. Just understand there is something for every type of palate for a reasonable price and great location!

The process of getting into the Biology program at University of North Carolina Wilmington was relatively easy. I just needed to declare my major at the registrar and get permission from the biology department. I then started taking biology classes and was required to take an "apply what you learned" type class in which I worked in a research lab on EHV-1 in horses. I earned a designated amount of credit hours for the course. That class and senior seminar were vital for graduation.

UNCW's campus is beautifully located right on the coast, about 10 minutes from the beach. Illustrated through its slightly sandy soil and long leaf pine forests UNCW's aesthetics are quite desirable. That athletic center has just recently (this past semester) been renovated and has almost doubled its size. There are many places/trails to run or walk, you can even bring your dogs to the campus and take them for walks. People on campus are extremely friendly and laid back. There is an abundance of campus activities, clubs, and organizations ranging from wakeboarding club and other outdoorsy type clubs, to organizations such as Global medical brigades who take trips to Honduras every year to serve medical needs in a rural part of the country. There is literally a club/organization for just about any type of interest and if there isn't its easy to start your own!

UNCW is located about 10 minutes from Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach. Its location so close to the coast sets it apart from other schools. At the beginning of the school year, the school takes bus loads of students to the beach for fun in the sun! It also allows for more opportunities in the classroom, for instance, in my ecology class we were able to study watersheds and sand dunes because of the schools location. Another unique attribute of this school is that we have a preserved Long Leaf Pine forest with about 150 acres that allowed us to study Pine Forest.

Overall, I would say the policies are relatively clear. However, as a transfer student I was unable to receive distinction at graduation because my GPA at my previous school was calculated into my overall GPA. Which is fine, but I was unaware of this policy until I was getting ready to graduate. Imagine my dismay when I found out I could not receive distinction despite my hard work at UNCW.

I have not had an internship yet, but I wish to soon get one. I plan to hopefully have an internship at some of the animal hospitals/clinics around Wilmington. I feel as though this would not be to difficult to achieve because of the abundant locations around.

Guys & Girls:
Most of the students at UNC-Wilmington look descent. However, a good handful of the students love to dress up in the latest styles and have all the latest technology. For example, many students have the newest ipones and Mac computers. As popular as these computers are there are those that still keep to the basic.

The drug scene at UNC-Wilmington is very low. There is not much involvement of that sort on campus! Zero Tolerance!
College Sophomore 2012-12-31T20:53:17Z
I received a fair amount of financial aid from UNC-Wilmington, but I feel as though they could have been a bit more generous.

UNCW is the epitome of diversity! There are a lot of international students as well as clubs that support LBGT students, students of color, students who want to be involved academic/social fraternities and sororities, artistic students, and students who love sports.

Lots of fast food options on the main road that the campus stems off of, pretty inexpensive, local restaurants are so mindful of student discounts, and lots of places to treat yourself to FROZEN YOGURT! :) Since Wilmington is a fairly laid back beach town, there are some great vegetarian places too!
College Sophomore 2012-12-23T03:25:17Z
There are SO many options, but should be healthier.

Health & Safety:
They give out free condoms in the student health center!

The transportation is average. There is a shuttle bus and there are citiy buses as well. It is a walk in order to get to the buses, but it is worth it.

Lots of variety, has the club life, the dive bars, the beach bars. Taxis are everywhere and affordable within reason. Underage students can still have a good time because most bars still let you in if you're over 18, you just can't drink there.

Two primary dining halls: Wagoner, the main one, seems like a step up from high school cafeteria food, though not too horrible...usually. (avoid anything that looks like "meat loaf surprise", just sayin') The Dub Cafe (which is meal-swiped/included in food plan) is more home-cooked, healthy, and better-tasting! (and the atmosphere is better, as well!) There are lots of other tasty options on-campus that do take one's meal plan, though figuring out what time each place is open (and what hours count toward one's meal plan) can take some adjustment! Vegan and other diet options are readily available, as is the free (?) campus dietitian!

Amazing college experience so far--academically, socially, and opportunity-wise! Wilmington is a great college city! UNCW gives one the tools he or she needs to succeed, so do it!
College Sophomore 2012-12-19T18:06:41Z
Though every year is different where weather is concerned, Wilmington (or at least this year) has A M A Z I N G weather! Generally sunny and warm (65 to 75), the beach almost always seems like a realistic option any day! Only during the first week or two of the school year is it truly hot and humid! I was still going/biking to the beach in mid-December, and it was 65/70!
College Sophomore 2012-12-19T18:04:04Z
Free city and campus bus system that seems reliable and of good quality. The city bus does, however, stop one mile from the beach, though it is easy to walk/bike the rest of the way. Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach is VERY bike/pedestran-friendly with lots of crosswalks (even across scary, sixteen-lane highways that seem like a death sentence when you're walking across them) and wide sidewalks.
College Sophomore 2012-12-19T18:01:20Z
Parking is hard to find and sometimes can be a pain with all the restrictions, color-coding, and fines!
College Sophomore 2012-12-19T18:00:40Z
Campus police bust on-campus parties pretty quickly, but the campus as a whole seems more concerned with academic integrity and ethics!
College Sophomore 2012-12-19T17:59:41Z
They're there, but not if you aren't looking for them! No one is going to judge you if you choose not to do them or, better yet, choose a group of friends who share the same values!
College Sophomore 2012-12-19T17:58:40Z
Greek Life is available if you want to pledge, though it is no way required to have a social life! Fraternities and sororities make up a good percentage of the student body, but it is not an overwhelming amount!
College Sophomore 2012-12-19T17:57:29Z
Some clubs and many bars in the Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach area!
Sorry, there are no reviews.
