Greek life at UNCW is truly as large a part of the campus as each individual wants it to be. While I myself am not a member of Greek life it is definitely something I considered and I do have many friends who are a part of it and very much enjoy it, choosing to make it a large part of their college experience. However, although I have nothing against it I have chosen to partake in other organizations like Student Ambassadors and the UNCW Dance Company that have provided me with just as much of a close social network as Greek life does at UNCW. Greek life events are promoted on campus, but only along with the many other student organizations. They do not take prevalence but are simply enjoyed by those who choose to partake in them.

Although I have not yet had the opportunity to have an internship as I just finished my Freshmen year up this past month, I can vouch that I have heard from multiple older students about the many opportunities for internships as a student at UNCW. Several of my friends who are business majors have been able to acquire very impressive internships including one with Guy Harvey. I definitely plan to have an internship because as a Communication Studies major it is vital that I have experience in the field to focus on my specialty of broadcast journalism. I am not the least bit concerned about acquiring an internship as I have not only heard from others about the opportunities for Communications majors in the area but have also been able to visit two news stations WWAY and WECT in the Wilmington area that offer internships to UNCW students.

At UNCW it is often very nice out which makes it hard to avoid going to the beach. It can also be extremely rainy, which is never fun to walk to class in.

I am a Communication Studies major and I am very satisfied with the major and the classes offered. The classes are very detailed and prepare you for your future in the major. The professors love what they teach and are all very helpful.

It is a very hands on program. All of my professors are there to make sure that the topi you are learning IS being learned. They take the time to get to know you individually.

Internships are not too hard to find if you are actively looking. The pay can range anywhere from nonpaid internship to a paid internship. In my experience, the pay is usually negotiable with the employer.

Basketball is big on campus at UNCW but other sports get overlooked.

Some people do drugs at UNCW but it's not very noticeable when walking on campus.

The network speed is generally slow and wireless access is sometimes not available on some parts of campus.

I am working on my second bachelors at University of North Carolina Wilmington. My first degree I received a BS in Biology where they have one of the best biology programs in North Carolina and I felt like I have learned things that help me to in my everyday like of how the body works, what hormones need to regulated if certain things are compromised, symptoms to look for in your child for certain disorders. Now my statistics degree I have learned how to analyze data that relates to everyday life, the tools to figure out what is the sample design based on the data given, and how to use different programs where I can combine both degrees to help pharmaceutical companies.

They are very strict with the academic policies if students fail to follow those policies they will punished for their actions.

Not too much going on in Wikmington NC considering nightlife. Mainly for students 21 and older. It's hard to experience that scenery during the school year.

It is very interesting to be in the field I am in. I am learning so much with the courses I am taking and it brings back a lot of memories from when I was in school a long time ago. When I am working on my homework and I think back I use to do a lot of that work. I think it is good to be able to learn new information so you can keep up with the job market so when applying for a job you will be able to answer I know how to do that particular job requirements.

The process was fairly easy, I had a admissions rep that helped me through the whole process.

Since I am taking online classes for Business Administration, I haven't looked for part-time or internship work.

The academics offered at UNCW are fantastic and among some of the most competitive. The workload for some classes can be tough depending on the professor, but your grades are usually reflected very well on how much effort you put into the class.

The cost of parking is reasonable, but depending on where you live on campus, finding parking near your dorm can be difficult

There are a lot of different options for off-campus dining in Wilmington. Since we are by the beach, there are a ton of seafood restaurants. We also have a lot of local places to go that are big for students.

Varsity sports aren't a huge part of campus life. We don't have a football team, which I really think hinders our school spirit. However, students really rally their support for other sports like baseball and soccer.

I've already posted my diversity review, but I thought I should clarify some of my opinions that may help incoming students. Just as in any social situation, people tend to gravitate toward others with similar backgrounds, and when these similar backgrounds are similar themselves in the surrounding area as a whole, it generally means the minority (whatever that may be -- racially, culturally, politically) might feel marginalized by the social majority. It doesn't mean the majority is necessarily discriminatory or leaving people out on purpose, they are just human, as we all are; they want to find others who will accept them as they are, and it's easy to accept someone when he or she is similar to yourself! It's exactly like this at UNCW! For whatever reason, the vast majority of the school (I'd say over 80%) is culturally Southern, religiously Protestant, and racially White. I am not saying there's anything inherently "wrong" with this picture, I just think it's important to be aware of the demographics of the place you're is going to spend the next 4+ years of your life! It's always great to immerse one's self in a demographic bubble outside of your own; it's experiences like the this that help you to grow. It's just never good to feel "left out" or alone. I am a very firm believer in the idea that if you actively search hard enough, you can almost always find and make friends in any social situation, but it's always easier in a place where there's an influx of many different types of people to choose from. Unfortunately, despite the many claims of various educational advertisements, UNCW is not that diverse, especially in the sense that so many people have the same mentality due to similar backgrounds. I also think ideology is an important factor in choosing friends we as humans consider, and UNCW has a conservative lean (though probably not as much socially, as it is a college campus), but is very apolitical. ("Beach state-of-mind", as with everything) When almost everyone else in the country was having a conniption fit about who will be / was going to stay president last fall, the vast majority of students walked by both the College Republicans and the Pro-Obama supporters without much notice. If you really want UNCW summed up in a sentence, think, "UNCW: Accepting, but not diverse; not liberal, not conservative; not extreme, but always at the beach!"

Greek life is known for parties, volunteer opportunities, fundraisers, and some other events, but it doesn't dominate at UNCW. It's not a big deal if you are in a frat or sorority, and it is not a big deal if you never set foot in one. As a matter of fact I have friends in various fraternities and sororities, but none of them treat me any different. I even joined a sorority for a month, but decided it wasn't for me and the girls still talk to me even after I quit. Overall, it's nice because you can go to fraternity parties, which can be fun, but it's not a status thing by any means (which is something I love about UNCW).

UNCW's Student Rec Center just opened this past Friday and it is three times the size it was before. We now have three racquetball courts, countless basketball courts, an entire room dedicated to weights, and two other rooms dedicated to resistance weights, two rooms of cardio machines, a cycling classroom, a gigantic classroom (for rec classes), an indoor and outdoor pool, and two indoor soccer/basketball courts as well. It is absolutely phenomenal.
Besides out wonderful Student Rec Center, numerous other buildings have been redone lately including but not limited to: the new psychology building, the nursing building, the main dining hall, and more!
UNCW's campus is absolutely beautiful and you would be crazy not to agree once you see it!

The drug scene at UNCW is not a huge definer of our school. Like any other school, it depends who you hang out with. There are the groups of students who smoke; however, drinking is more prevalent for college students. Although, drinking on campus underage is monitored closely.

Wilmington has the beach within 5 miles and downtown waterfront with the battleship tour, great shopping & restaurants.
