Yes, you can walk onto a team. However, usually as a walk on you aren't offered a scholorship (at least the first year) because once tryouts are held the teams money has already been spent on their recruits. You might be able to get money for your next years if you prove yourself. But it's really hard to walk on, almost impossible at a D1
not having a football team definitely impacts out athletic scene, however you can always find a group to go to a basketball game or baseball game!

UNC-Wilmington sponsors intercollegiate sports and has held Division I status in the NCAA for more than 30 years. UNCW is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, or CAA. The first thing a lot of people dwell on when visiting UNCW is the fact that there is no football program. It may come to be much later in the future, but not any time soon. "No football" may be viewed as negative by some, but it's actually a neutral aspect or a plus for others. The many other sports at UNCW are not overshadowed or neglected, and, therefore, Seahawks excel at a lot of different sports rather than all of the popularity and success resting with just one. Students have the chance to appreciate and learn about teams that may otherwise be overlooked if football were in the picture, and each UNCW sports program is given equal opportunity and establishment. Soccer and baseball are popular with immense talent, and basketball games have a lot of energy and supply a lot of fun, but they just don't win that often. However, the men's basketball team has made frequent NCAA tournament appearances. Women's basketball is a fantastic program with consistent dominance within the conference. Other successful sports include swimming and diving (which have won division championships), track and field, and surfing (which has had international success).
For students who don't want to compete at the varsity level, UNCW offers a lot of club and intramural sports, as well. Club sports are offered within many different active clubs, and are still competitive and travel to other schools to compete, but they may be a better option for those who don't want the demanding nature of varsity-level athletics. Intramurals are completely recreational and fun. The games and championships are all in good fun ,and the winners receive highly coveted championship T-shirts!
