UNCW's laid-back campus vibe does not carry over to leniency toward campus rules and policies. Campus rules are strictly enforced, but they are all put in place for the benefit and safety of UNCW's students; campus strictness is completely fair and justified. RAs and campus police officers are going to punish those who break the rules. They understand the college life of students and how situations vary, so warnings and UNCW-only citations are given out first to violators before harsher actions are taken (depending on the seriousness of the violation, of course). The student handbook information is provided to all students so they know the rules.
There are not a lot of strict rules regarding student activities, but the rules that are in place make sense. Visitors are allowed in the residence halls—residents just have to separately sign them in so it's known by the front desk who is in the building at all times. Underage drinking or underage possession of alcohol is not allowed and not tolerated. Even students caught in disruptive situations with others drinking will face consequences. Attendance policies vary with each class and professor, with some professors not requiring attendance and others stating full attendance in the syllabus at the start of the semester. Whatever the attendance policy, professors will hold students to it. In all aspects of student life, students are told the rules and what is expected of them, informed of consequences if the rules are broken, and learn positive decision-making skills from campus strictness.
